WSP USA Associate Consultant, Urban Planning in Vancouver, Washington

This Opportunity

Provides technical planning assistance and guidance for capturing, modeling, and analyzing planning information, geographical resources, and spatial and tabular data to inform and create plans for land use and urban development that account for economic, social, and environmental impacts. Tasks may include assisting with the preparation of comprehensive plans, subarea/master plans, zoning code updates, public involvement, and regulatory compliance for a variety of client projects relating to development, construction, infrastructure, transportation, environment, resiliency, revitalization, and adaptation. Particular emphases of this position includes assistance with long-range transportation and land use planning, development review and preparation of policy and codes for public sector clients, and assistance with public involvement activities. The ideal candidate is proactive in asking questions and seeking information and able to work as part of a team, sharing project responsibilities. This position requires analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure work products are of a quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Your Impact

  • Assist with the preparation of long-range plans, policy recommendations, and technical memorandums/reports.

  • Assist with the preparation of development review documentation including staff reports, notices, and environmental compliance reports.

  • Conduct public involvement activities including meeting logistics, attendance at community events and open houses, preparation of community survey and interview questions, and communications to inform project development and decision-making.

  • Conduct research and analysis in support of various land use, transportation, and environmental planning projects.

  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise analysis and reporting.

  • Perform professional land/urban planning work and assist with conducting investigations, inspections, studies, and surveys to gain further information on a particular problem or issue, verify site characteristics, and/or to plan for future needs affecting land use, development, utilities, infrastructure, construction, and/or transportation to control and guide development and renewal.

  • Prepare drafts of technical memos, meeting minutes, transmittals, presentations, and other written materials summarizing research with findings and conclusions.

  • Assist with reading, interpreting, composing, and reviewing planning and environmental reports.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)

  • 1 to 3 years of experience working in the land/urban planning field, actively engaging in general plans, specific/master plans, zoning code updates, public involvement, and regulatory compliance for a variety of client projects relating to development, construction, infrastructure, transportation, environment, resiliency, revitalization, and/or adaptation.

  • Effective analytical skills and prior experience with research techniques, local/regional geography, culture, and ecology.

  • Knowledge of relevant zoning laws, permitting requirements, notification and compliance practices, and applicable Regional/State/Federal regulatory framework.

  • Proficient interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

  • Proficiency with technical business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions and identify the most effective manner to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.

  • Ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical work day/week.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree is preferred.

  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

  • Experience with ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or other design and presentation software.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $57,400.00 - $94,710.00

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
