Job Summary

Works under close supervision to collaborate with scientific researchers in resolving storage issues and assist in designing novel solutions to new research challenges. Contribute code and best practices to academic research communities. Install, maintain, and troubleshoot hardware and software specialized for the needs of scientific research on high performance file systems.

Duties & Responsibilities of Assistant Storage Engineer

Operations (75%)

Engage with service teams to perform routine tasks.

Assist with Installing, updating, and troubleshooting hardware that underpins large research file systems.

Assist with maintaining and supporting HPC file systems such as Storage Scale (GPFS), Lustre, Ceph, etc.

Manage existing systems using automated configuration management tools such as Ansible.

Maintain documentation on user issues, system use, and system capabilities for both internal management and engineering as well as external users.

Maintain existing scripts written in one or more programming languages such as bash or python.

Coordinate with divisional peers, direct manager, direct service team leads, and vendors.

Train on new technologies.

Technical Investigation (25%)

Assist with researching and design of novel, HPC storage hardware and software solutions to achieve an effective storage research ecosystem.

Assist in the enhancement of the quality and optimal use of NCSA\'s research storage environment with the seamless integration of various advanced computational systems, data systems and services.

Duties & Responsibilities of Storage Engineer

Operations (55%)

Install, update, and troubleshoot hardware that underpins large research file systems.

Deploy and maintain HPC file systems such as Storage Scale (GPFS), Lustre, Ceph, etc.

Engage with service teams to perform complex tasks and design novel solutions.

Collaborate with researchers to diagnose and resolve their storage usage issues.

Maintain and create documentation on user issues, system use, and system capabilities.

Create new scripts in one or more programming languages (such as bash or python) to improve the efficiency of routine tasks.

Coordinate and provide on-call and off-hours support as assigned.

Plan upgrades and maintenance windows for HPC storage services.

Technical Investigation (40%)

Research and design novel, HPC storage hardware and software solutions to achieve an effective storage research ecosystem.

Enhance the quality and optimal use of NCSA\'s research storage environment with the seamless integration of various advanced computational systems, data systems and services.

Test and document new technologies, present prepared materials to internal engineers.

Engagement and Outreach (5%)

Create and present training materials for internal and external use.

Participate in training junior staff on research system engineering best practices.

Attend conferences and user groups.

Duties & Responsibilities of Senior Storage Engineer

Technical Investigation (55%)

Lead a team of assistant storage engineers as the primary engineer for assigned high performance storage environments.

Proactively ensure that the project offices have up-to-date information about their high-performance storage sub-systems.

Make technical recommendations on hardware configuration, user policies and security procedures.

Provide technical assistance to users and convey user feedback and concerns to project staff.

Establish, update and maintain system and administrative logs for current and future research opportunities.

Keep up to date on current trends in system engineering research and utilize this knowledge in recommending and implementing storage solutions.

Track research activity of relevant vendors and NCSA partners.

Operations (35%)
