JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor in the field of Egyptology, beginning January 2025 or August 2025.

This is a non-tenure-track, one-year term appointment, with the possibility of reappointment for a second year. Responsibilities include teaching four courses per year (two per semester), research, and some service duties.

We seek candidates who are able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Ancient Egyptian history, language, and culture. The candidate’s research focus may pertain to any area within Egyptology: language, literature, history, religion, art, or archaeology.

The Department embraces the entire Mediterranean and Near Eastern world in antiquity, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the dialogue across the fields of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies. The ability to assist in developing the Department’s graduate program and to contribute to the Department’s study abroad programs are desirable.

Candidates for the Visiting Assistant Professor position must have a Ph.D. in Egyptology, Near Eastern Studies, Classics, History, or a closely related field in hand by the start date, as well as expertise in Ancient Egyptian language, a record of scholarly publication and productivity, and evidence of undergraduate-level teaching experience.

Candidates for the Visiting Associate Professor position must have all aforementioned requirements along with at least four years of undergraduate- and/or graduate-level teaching experience.

The above titles will be filled at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor or Associate Teaching Professor, based on education and experience.

In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

To be considered for this position, applications must be submitted electronically and include a formal letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a sample of scholarly writing, and evidence of teaching excellence. System limitations allow for a total of 5 documents (5mb per document) as part of the application. Please combine materials to meet the 5-document limit.

Candidates should also arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted to Lynn Carey, Administrative Assistant to the Department, at lmc5897@psu.edu.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position may be directed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Gonzalo Rubio (gxr18@psu.edu).
