JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Drs. Kwasniewski and Hopfer (https://foodscience.psu.edu/directory/faculty) are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar for collaborative research around tannin characterization in different foods, such as wine and cocoa using a novel MS-based method, tannin interactions with food components and perception, and the effects of food contact materials on consumer perception. Funds for this position are coming from the Pennsylvania Wine Marketing, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and industry sponsors.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Food Science, Chemistry, or related fields. The ideal candidate will have experience with food chemistry, chromatography (HPLC, GC), mass spectrometry (MS), sensory evaluation with trained panels or consumers, and data analysis (metabolomics or similar experience preferred). Experience with protein analysis, e.g., SDS-PAGE, proteomics, is a plus.

Duties

The candidate will be expected to design and execute experiments to finetune a novel tannin method and to apply this method to determine the effect of plant genetics, environment, processing, etc. on the chemistry, quality, and/or bioactivity of the final food product/ingredient using laboratory-scale and pilot-scale approaches and equipment.

· The candidate will also be expected to work alongside staff and students in the Penn State Sensory Evaluation Center (SEC), and design, and execute consumer sensory tests to determine the effects of food contact materials on perception.

· The candidate will be expected to perform the necessary data analysis and prepare manuscripts for publication and work with Drs. Kwasniewski and Hopfer to produce necessary reports to funders. The candidate will also be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students working as part of the larger research group.

· Finally, it is expected that the candidate will prepare and submit applications for external funding through appropriate fellowship and grant mechanisms.

Appointment Details

The position is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance of duties and availability of funding. Salary support will be commensurate with experience.
