JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State is looking for a Production Supervisor to supervise production and associated operational activities of the Berkey Creamery production facility. Serve as the production supervisor of the dairy processing plant coordinating activities related to production, sanitation, warehousing and distribution, etc. F ocus is on overseeing manufacturing of the overall operation. Role includes supporting the educational, manufacturing, sales, distribution and warehousing functions of the Creamery with the primary intent on growing sales and improving profitability. This position in intended to develop over time with experience, knowledge and training into a production manager position. Actively participate as a key member of the Creamery Management Team. Manage special projects and efforts as assigned by Management. Work closely with departmental managers to improve overall operation of Berkey Creamery.

PRODUCTION

Serve as the production supervisor for the Berkey Creamery overseeing all aspects of production and distribution as well as activities associated with operating the dairy plant. Responsibilities reflect technical as well as administrative aspects of dairy products processing.

Supervise and manage unionized staff of approximately 15-20 employees. Assign work and monitor activities. Must be able to coach and motivate employees to a high level of performance. Train and supervise employees and student interns. Institute disciplinary action when warranted.

Must possess or be willing to obtain an understanding of dairy processing equipment and practices to assure the manufacture of safe and quality products. Must be familiar with and be able to enforce GMP’s and other quality standards. Should be familiar with food safety regulations as related to the FSMA and third-party quality and regulatory audits. Should be PCQI, Pasteurizer Operators Workshop and GFSI (SQF or similar standard) certified or willing to become certified in each area.

Must be able to track, monitor, analyze and report production data to ensure manufacturing objectives are being met. Requires creation, modification and implementation of SOP’s. Required development, implementation and management of productivity improvement efforts aimed at improving efficiencies and eliminating losses on routine activities.

Evolving responsibilities as growth progresses toward the production manager position may include:

•Develop, implement and manage processes/systems related to the manufacturing plant.

•Track, report and analyze key manufacturing data.

• Communicate metrics to employees and management on a routine basis.

•Prepare monthly reports and provide summaries related to production activities on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.

•Manage productivity projects as assigned by management.

PLANNING/SCHEDULING

Coordinate production scheduling with office staff, technical service lead, process operators and quality department to provide the most efficient utilization of resources. Must comply with applicable food safety regulations as well as all local and state regulatory requirements in order to meet projected business needs.

Develop, implement and maintain a process/system for scheduling of routine production and related production activities. Manage scheduling through coordination of available resources - equipment, labor, materials, storage, etc.

SANITATION/MAINTENANCE

Oversee sanitation and coordinate maintenance needs of the of facility on a daily basis as well as provide administrative oversight of sanitation on a mid- and long-term basis in conjunction with Quality Manager and General Manager.

Develop, implement, and manage processes/systems related to a master sanitation and master maintenance programs. Processes

and systems are to serve the internal business needs of the Berkey Creamery as well as comply with all local and state regulatory requirements as well as quality requirements. Requires creation, modification and implementation of SSOP’s.

Create and maintain an updated master sanitation and master maintenance schedule/program including schedules for all plant equipment and associated areas. Manage and maintain chemical inventories to support facility.

WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT & DISTRIBUTION

Supervise inventory control efforts including routine counting and reporting of ingredient, packaging, finished goods and other inventories by unit, age and storage location, etc. in conjunction with Business Manager and General Manager.

Oversee shipping/distribution, shuttle services and receiving efforts for the Berkey Creamery facility as related to plant operations. Assist with store activities as assigned by Management.

Manage internal and external storage facilities including cleanliness and organization of each facility for optimized efficiency and compliance with food safety regulations.

Manage delivery and shuttle services for Creamery truck fleet. Administrate truck fleet maintenance and repairs in conjunction with Maintenance.

SAFETY & TRAINING

Manage in coordination with General Manager personal safety program of the Berkey Creamery including leading an Integrated Safety Program (ISP). Work with CAS Safety and EH&S to develop and maintain a model safety program within the College of Agricultural Sciences as well as at the University.

Prepare safety reports as required to satisfy the requirements of the department, college, university as well as local, state and federal agencies as required by law.

Serve as training leader/coordinator as related to workplace practices and operation of equipment.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PAY RANGE LISTED BELOW FOR THIS POSITION IS NOT REFLECTIVE OF THE ACCURATE COMPENSATION FOR THIS ROLE. THE ACCURATE PAY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION IS $68,200.00-$102.300.00.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$46,400.00 - $67,300.00
