JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories (EESL) invites applicants for an immediate opening for a Core Research Technologist position, to support the Environmental Contaminants Analytical Laboratory (ECAL).

ECAL is an Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE) shared core facility that provides open access to support all Penn State faculty, students and external customers. The laboratory supports multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research across hydrology, biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, food and plant science and material science. ECAL projects include analytical support of a wide range of contaminants of emerging concern in various matrices including water, soil/sediment, biologic, synthetic and geologic materials.

Responsibilities: The Core Research Technologist provides consultation and guidance for users on specialized research methods and techniques within a core lab facility. Following are some of the other key duties of this position:

  • Guide users on experimental design, instrument capabilities, and analysis techniques

  • Be responsible for all tasks associated with sample preparation of a wide range of matrices, utilize various sample preparation laboratory instruments to prepare calibration standards, weigh samples, measure sample volume, perform sample treatment, digestions, extractions, evaporation, etc.

  • Laboratory glassware washing and decontamination, ordering and maintaining lab supplies inventory, and managing lab waste in accordance with established procedures.

  • Oversee daily lab operations related to inventory, scheduling, and budget, and making sure that they are compliant with University, sponsor, and federal rules and regulations

  • Oversee lab safety including delivering training, developing safety protocols, and maintaining safety and compliance documentation

  • Ensure the availability of high-quality services for the University research community

  • Provide data reports for customers

Education and Experience: This position will be filled at a Professional, or an Intermediate Professional level. For a Professional level, the minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree preferably in the Sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A higher level of experience is required for higher level positions. The candidate must be highly organized, be attentive to detail and possess excellent analytical skills. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

This is a term position, funded for one year from the start date, with a possibility of renewal.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$38,300.00 - $61,000.00
