JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Micronutrients and Pregnancy (MAP) Lab, under the leadership of Dr. Alison Gernand, is seeking a non-tenure-line Assistant Research Professor to work on research projects related to micronutrient and lipid biomarkers during pregnancy and lactation as well as the physiology of placental and mammary gland development.

This position is a full-time, 36-week, nine-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment funded for one year, with the possibility of renewal.

The MAP Lab is housed in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, and focuses on maternal, fetal and infant micronutrient nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, with an emphasis on placental biology and development of new methods to aid clinical care and research in this space. The goal of the lab is to conduct research that benefits maternal child health in low-resource settings, particularly low- and middle-income countries.

This faculty position would focus on biochemical and physiological research in the placenta and lactation and well as work with multi-site, international studies on nutrition, the placenta, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Responsibilities of the position include:

Manage multi-site global research projects

Produce, maintain, and analyze technical research results generated from biochemical procedures

Conduct data analysis and oversee dataset curation and management

Pursue and lead an independent line of research

Author and co-author research articles

Prepare grant proposals

Assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies

Supervise laboratory procedures, safety, and development of methods

Mentor/co-mentor postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students

Collaborate with other members of the lab, department, Penn State and outside research organizations, helping to disseminate the work of the MAP lab to the scientific community and ensure methods are up-to-date and rigorous

Teach courses as requested by the Nutritional Sciences department

Qualifications: The Assistant Research Professor should possess a PhD in Nutritional Sciences or a related field by the start date. Postdoctoral research experience is highly preferred. The successful candidate should have experience in implementing and developing biochemical analyses of nutrients in biospecimens including blood and milk, and data analysis. Additionally, the candidate should have expertise in pregnancy, placenta, and lactation, including collaborative work in low- and middle-income countries. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills are required to ensure the success of multiple research projects ongoing in the laboratory. Experience in grant writing and demonstrated success in receiving external funding is highly preferred.
