JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Pennsylvania State University Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Research Laboratory and the Penn State Aeroacoustics Lab are conducting research to characterize and reduce the noise of unmanned aircraft.The Pennsylvania State University Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Research Laboratory performs guidance, navigation, and control research utilizing unmanned aircraft. Particular emphasis is on fault-tolerant flight control, vision-based navigation/guidance, and innovative new vehicle configurations. The Penn State Aeroacoustics lab conducts research on the aerodynamics and acoustics of aircraft, with a focus on enabling ultra-quiet operation of advanced vertical lift aircraft.

This position seeks candidates who can effectively mentor and guide graduate student researchers in the performance of research and publications.Assist in the management of multiple ongoing research projects, including meeting with sponsors and reporting.Develop software and hardware systems to support unmanned aircraft research experiments across these multiple projects, and guide graduate students and other researchers in their implementation and use for research. Assist in the performance of flight test operations, including obtaining FAA Part 107 certification to lead such tests.Contribute to these ongoing research programs with creative problem solving.Document results and perform rigorous configuration management of hardware and software.Prior experience performing acoustic measurements of aircraft in flight is a requirement.

The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in engineering or a related discipline prior to hire date.

This Assistant Research Professor position is a non-tenure-track, term appointment for one year with the possibility of renewal.
