JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is a recognized world leader in impactful teaching and learning; research; and service to the University, the profession and society. We are seeking innovative, knowledgeable, and collaborative individuals to join the academic advising community in providing academic advising to in-major students from their 2nd year through graduation.

The College of Engineering is supportive of flexible work arrangements when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of the unit and the essential duties of the position. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

These academic advisers work as a team geographically embedded within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, working closely with department faculty to serve students in the Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Computational Data Sciences majors with navigating their unique learning experiences and helping them determine appropriate academic plans. The academic advisers are expected to support and participate in various programs such as New Student Orientation and group advising presentations. These positions require interaction with students, parents, faculty, and various college staff members, and comfort with various modes of communication.

The selected individuals will support undergraduate students with the following:

Integration into their academic major or program's community

Developing relationships with key members of the academic community

Engagement in communication efforts to help develop students' sense of belonging

Initiate proactive advising interventions as needed

Guide students through the goal setting, course selection, and scheduling process

Help with co-curricular experience and engagement exploration

Assist with the interpretation of university and college policies and procedures

Address student concerns and make professional referrals as appropriate

Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records

Resolve academic problems and escalating unusual matters, and

Identify and monitor academic progress

Desired qualities and skills include, but are not limited to:

Enthusiasm for working with college students and helping them define and achieve their own successes

A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Demonstrated knowledge of applying student and identity development and growth mindset theories

Desire to develop and execute high-quality academic advising best practices and standards

Ability to interface effectively with a diverse community inclusive of students, staff, faculty, and administrators

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Education:

This position will be filled at the Intermediate Professional or Advanced Professional level, depending on the final applicant's experience and education.Intermediate requires a minimum of a Master's degree and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination f education and experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a desire to work with different student populations in a high-enrollment academic unit are necessities for success in this position. The successful candidates will have strong backgrounds in working with high school or college-aged students, and a proven track record of commitment to serving diverse student populations.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is: $42,100.00 - $67,300.00
