Responsible to: Building Principals in consultation with Special Education Coordinator
Qualifications:
- Must hold a valid South Dakota Teaching Credential certifying the teachers authority to provide instruction in Special Education
Position Description The Special Education Teacher provides students, identified through a multi-disciplinary process as being a student with Special Education needs, a program that enables the student to reach his/her fullest physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral potential.
Duties
- Directly responsible to the building principal in consultation with the Special Education Coordinator
- Assume duties included in the classroom teacher description
- Recommend policies and programs essential to needs of exceptional children
- Keep informed of all legal requirements governing Special Education
- Provide leadership in establishing new programs and developing improved understanding of existing programs
- Be a member of the multi-disciplinary team for the purpose of assessing student needs and placement
- Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports and records legally required
- Maintain complete cumulative records for children receiving special services
- Maintain an inventory of equipment and materials purchased for Special Education
- Give input on an on-going basis to the Coordinator of Special Education on the total Special Education Program, curriculum, procedures, and individual student needs and achievements
- Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, keep current with literature and research, improve techniques, and attend appropriate professional meetings and conventions
- Write or assist with the writing of an individual education plan (IEP) for each student to address the students assessed needs
- Select appropriate learning activities and materials to implement the students IEP goals and provide instruction for an appropriate portion of the school day based on the IEP
- Report to parents, in the manner identified in the IEP, the students progress toward their goals
- Serve on committees when necessary
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have Special Education students in regular classroom situations, interpreting abilities, and disabilities of these students to the staff
- Assist the student with classroom activities and assignments given in the general education setting
- Assist with the registration of special needs students
