Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) Engineer, to join our L3Harris Reliability team. As a FRACAS Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, investigating, and mitigating the impact of field failures throughout the lifecycle of our systems and products at a customer reporting level. Your expertise in understanding failure mechanisms (both hardware and software), investigating root causes, and ensuring accurate, detailed documentation will be crucial to maintaining the performance, reliability, and availability of our systems. This role requires a strong technical background, analytical thinking, proactive mindset and exceptional problem-solving abilities.

  • Establishes and executes the reliability closed-loop FRACAS program, procedures, and databases.

  • Manages failure reporting requirements throughout all phases of the system’s lifecycle (design, production, test, operations and sustainment).

  • Performs and facilitates Root Cause Analysis (RCA), as required, utilizing tools such as: DMAIC, 8D, Fish-Bone (Ishikawa), 5-Why, Pareto, etc.…

  • Understands failure modes and mechanisms at a physical level (e.g., mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical), and at the software level (i.e., Built-in-Test (BIT), interfaces, etc.…).

  • Reviews Fault Isolation (FI) and troubleshooting procedures for thoroughness and accuracy.

  • Initiates or participates in Failure Review Boards (FRB) as necessary.

  • Analyzes FRACAS data for actionable insights and creates reports / dashboards for system performance and reliability recommendations back to engineering and the program management organization.

  • Ensures failure trends are appropriately mitigated or accounted for in new or updated designs.

  • Participates in FMEAs/FMECAs (Failure Mode Effects Analysis / Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis) meetings to ensure real-world failures are captured and mitigated within the FMEA/FMECA.

  • Calculates observed reliability and MTBF to tie back in with other reliability predictions and models (e.g., RBD, FTA).

  • Calculates Built-in-Test (BIT) Fault Detection Rate (FDR), Fault Isolation Rate (FIR), and False Alarm Rate (FAR) to support Testability analysis.

  • Performs Reliability Growth analysis.

  • Promotes a culture of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), implements Predictive Maintenance (PdM) processes, and recommends both logistical and engineering opportunities to improve long-term sustainability of the systems through a mission readiness lens. Knowledge of Prognostics Health Management (PHM) a plus.

  • Contributes to the development of scheduled / corrective maintenance procedures, recommended spare parts lists, and tools and test equipment lists through FRACAS trends.

  • Collaborates with Risk Management to issue or support risks based on predicted and observed reliability data and trends.

  • Creates professional, data-driven presentations for briefing technical decisions or recommendations both to internal stakeholders and external vendors/customers.

    Essential Functions:

  • Ability to productively use desktop software applications such as MS Office Tools (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and related software tools, is required.

  • Works effectively and efficiently in a virtual environment with tools such as MS Teams, Atlassian Jira, etc.

  • Proficiency in advanced Excel methods (data structures, pivot tables, manipulation, transformation and visualization) is highly preferred.

  • Technical understanding of electronic components / computer hardware concepts is a plus.

  • Technical understanding of troubleshooting complex failure modes which include the interactions between software and hardware is a plus.

  • Proactive mindset, with the ability to anticipate potential Reliability challenges and develop effective mitigation strategies.

  • Possesses strong understanding and use of reliability software tools (e.g., ReliaSoft, Relex (PTC Windchill), Reylence).

  • Statistical analysis experience using software tools such as MiniTab, JMP, R, MatLab, or similar.

  • Experience in data mining using business tools, SQL, PowerBI, Tableau, Alteryx, or similar data visualization tool.

    Job Qualification Requirements:

    Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience. Graduate Degree with minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.

  • Requires mastery level knowledge within a specific technical area or multiple job areas typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. Viewed as an expert and/or resource within the field by peers in and outside the organization.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplined integrated product team (IPT).

  • Applicant must have a willingness to relocate to the Tulsa, OK area.

  • The essential physical requirements of the position will be reviewed with the applicant during the interview.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • An existing Department of Defense security clearance of any level.

  • Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar educational background preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience in the Aerospace/Defense sector.

  • Knowledge and experience in advanced Optical Systems, EO/IR Sensors, or ISR applications.

  • Knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principals, methods, and tools.

  • Statistical methods and distributions associated with reliability engineering (e.g., exponential, Weibull).

  • Reliability prediction methodologies (e.g., MIL-217, VITA 51).

  • Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) / Integrated Product Support (IPS) experience.

  • Verification and Validation (V&V) experience or Integration and Test (I&T) experience.

  • Environmental Testing / Qualification (ESS) experience.

  • Knowledge of databases and data mining / big data analytics / predictive analytics.

  • Knowledge of any of the following documents: MIL-STD-2155, MIL-HDBK 217, MIL-HDBK 338, MIL-STD 1629, TA-HB-0009, SAE ARP5580, SAE 1025

  • Experience working under an AS9100 / ISO9001 Quality Management System.

  • ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) Certification or similar.
