Portland General Electric Substation Civil Structural Engineer in Tualatin, Oregon

Department Summary:

Substation Design Engineering plans and implements the design, procurement, installation and/or maintenance of electrical systems and apparatus such as electric motors, equipment controls, lighting, wiring and power systems/devices, structures, foundations and conductor systems for the generation, transmission, transformation and distribution of electric power. Develops designs for new substations and retrofit of existing facilities. Provides technical support to construction crews on department designs.

Job Summary

Civil Structural Provides, plans, performs risk assessments and implements cost effective and sound engineering and construction support solutions that meet technical requirements, all applicable codes and regulatory requirements for hydro, thermal and wind generation facilities, substations and switchyards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Standards Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and discerns the need for and provides guidance and direction to colleagues on engineering processes and standards. Supports civil engineering initiatives through extended knowledge of civil engineering principles and all applicable codes and regulatory requirements and standards. Applies knowledge to plan, develop, coordinate and direct major and minor project assignments with complex features associated with design, construction, maintenance or testing; discerns the need for and provides technical guidance and support to other engineers and customers.

  • Engineering Production Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects, including establishing work plans to be applied. Leads the development and review of civil engineering and construction support for generation and substation facilities; provides technical support and guidance to colleagues, department, organization and company; determines design requirements to assist construction activities for more complex projects and determines project requirements and scope for more complex projects.

  • Project Coordination Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on complex projects, representing the team to internal and external stakeholders (i.e., regulatory, technical society, etc.). Leads projects with complex design, construction, maintenance and testing elements in support of engineering and construction needs of generation and substation facilities.

  • Knowledge Sharing Actively advances knowledge management of the enterprise and provides mentoring; participates in professional societies and technical committees and may assist with code/standard authoring; is externally recognized in the industry as a technical expert; reviews engineering work, resolves resource conflicts and identifies training needs. Provides input and review of technical training for department and company training; provides technical training to department and company through internal training program.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Required p4, Principal level

  • Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

  • Experience Typically eight or more years in civil engineering.

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.

  • Valid drivers license required

Required p3, Senior level

  • Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

  • Experience Typically five or more years in civil engineering or four or more years in a related field with PE license.

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.

  • Valid drivers license required

PGE supports hybrid flexible work arrangements; and will have a combination of in-the-office and working offsite. However, these arrangements may change due to business needs or changes in responsibility.

Compensation Range:

$96,300.00 - $189,875.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
