City Of Trinidad Power & Light - Plant Operator in Trinidad, Colorado

POSITION (or) JOB TITLE: Power & Light Plant Operator

MUSTS: High School Diploma or GED Ability to comprehend and apply knowledge of electrical systems and operations. Two (2) - three (3) years related experience and/or training. One (1) year college level course in basic electricity with study in computer programming, testing, troubleshooting, and safety preferred. Experience in operations of dual-fuel engine and caterpillar engine generator sets Preferred. Must possess a valid current state-issued driver license and not be under suspension, revocation or denial nor have any prior alcohol related driving offenses within the last five years. Successful candidates must pass a physical examination in accordance with job duties, a background investigation and drug screen prior to employment. Must pass the City's Drug and Alcohol program, including pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing. CPR and First Aid training required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Regular and predictable attendance in the performance of this job is an essential function. Operates, monitors, and synchronizes all units. Controls and adjusts various valves, switching devices and other control equipment to maintain proper operations of dual-fuel engine and caterpillar diesel generator sets and generating equipment. Makes adjustments to regulate voltage, frequency and power angle for power generated and received. Troubleshoots power outage to identify source of outage and repair or make adjustments, calls out line crew. if problem remains unsolved. Determines the need for additional power generation as needed. Operates switch gear on control board for all circuits to maintain power to customers. Protects life and property within the system and to coordinate work efforts of line personnel. Monitors gauges and log sheets. Follows all established safety standards in the performance of assigned duties. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge of: Electrical theory and maintenance, repair and inspection techniques to provide reliable and dependable electrical distribution systems. Methods and practices used in the operation of maintenance of low and high-pressure gas or oil-fired generators and related equipment. Safety practices and precautions related to the operation of a power generating station. Skilled in: Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Organizing, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement within areas of responsibility. Troubleshooting causes of operating errors and determining course of action. Ability to: Ability to perform standard inspections and make minor adjustments to related mechanical equipment. Listen to, read, understand and communicate the English language so that others are able to understand. This must be done both orally and in writing, at the level appropriate for the position held. Ability to perform duties independently and with initiative. Ability to maintain effective working relations with superiors and subordinates. Ability to perform minor repair or maintenance work on mechanical systems. Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
