JOB DUTIES:

GENERAL STATEMENT: This position provides for the planting and maintenance of greenhouse plants used for multiplication of the varieties in the Accelerated Budwood Initiative program for the citrus industry.

Maintains all greenhouse plants, including pruning and sprouting, transplanting, irrigating, fertilizing, mixing and spraying pesticides, and other cultural practices.

Greenhouse propagation responsibilities include the following duties:

1) produces test plants from seeds, cuttings, or grafting; 2) keeps all identifications accurately, and uses special care to prevent contamination of plant material with viruses; 3) keeps records of plants propagated and change orders and transmits to the correct person to obtain plant tags and pot labels.

Maintains good sanitation to include pressure washing, removing weeds, spraying herbicide as needed, sweeping floors, washing pots, sterilizing benches, and removing plant debris.

Assists with budwood cutting, as needed.

Participates in cold protection and weekend watering; attends training seminars; assists other bureau personnel in citrus culture and budwood distribution; assists with fruit harvest, and seed extraction as necessary.

Performs related work as required by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of routine greenhouse and field nursery operations.

  • Skills used in citrus propagations.

  • Ability to work outdoors in hot, cold, and humid environments.

  • Ability to walk on uneven ground and in inclement weather.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and bend repetitiously.

  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations and to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to perform cultural practices required to grow plants, detect discrepancies, and initiate the appropriate actions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
