Actalent Principal Electrical Systems Design Engineer in Torrance, California

Job Title: Principal Electrical Systems Design EngineerJob Description

The ideal candidate for the position is someone who has experience with power distribution for electrification and can own product development through all stages of conception, prototype, and productization. In this role, you will work closely with a talented engineering team in a fast-paced environment to apply emerging technologies in innovative ways to rapidly produce new products. You will own systems integration efforts on High Power Microwave Phased Array systems and architect and implement designs for power distribution, communications, safety, and other system electrical needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop system-level power budgets and coordinate requirements with subsystem design teams.

  • Lead the integration of large-scale phased array systems from prototype development to full-scale production.

  • Define and refine technical requirements and specifications for High Power Microwave system components and overall architecture.

  • Design and prototype critical components such as power supplies, signal processing units, antenna arrays, and related electronic systems.

  • Engage in hands-on activities such as wiring, testing, and debugging high-frequency and high-power phased array systems.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers on component design, testing, and evaluation to meet system requirements.

  • Architect high voltage & battery systems.

  • Review current systems and architect next-generation systems.

  • Guide junior team members in high-level electrical system design.

Essential Skills

  • Power distribution experience

  • Energy storage design experience - capacitors or batteries

  • High voltage or battery experience

  • High-level electrical system design experience

  • Experience working on a product from concept to field deployment

  • Degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Electrical Engineering

  • 8+ years of industry experience, preferably spanning the entire product lifecycle

  • Ability to articulate and defend technical decisions with clear written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledgeable with Jira/scrum best practices

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience implementing high-voltage power distribution and battery systems

  • Familiarity with communication protocols relevant to phased array systems (e.g., CAN, Ethernet)

  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD, IEC standards)

  • Proficiency in PCB schematic design and test

  • Experience with Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)

  • Aerospace/Defense experience and/or military experience preferred, or experience in Directed Energy or a similar industry

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Knowledge of project management software such as MS Project or Smartsheet

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Clearance

  • Ability to travel on an occasional basis

  • Power electronics design experience

  • Familiarity with Jama, Agile systems, and Altium

Work Environment

The position offers a dynamic work environment with a talented engineering team. The role primarily involves systems designing in the early stages, with minimal integration or testing. The candidate can work remotely one day a week if needed, but not much flexibility past that. The ability to obtain and maintain a US Clearance and occasional travel are required.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $158600.00 - $189900.00/yr.

Pay is for Level 4. If we find someone with a PhD and 25+ years of experience, they could consider them at the Level 5 (Senior Principal). We don't have a pay band for that but it would be higher.

This is a fully onsite position in Torrance,CA.
