Summary

The Sr. Chemistry Technician performs quantitative and qualitative analyses including sampling, in-service testing or testing and measuring of radioactive contaminants and chemical properties of various environmental, liquid, and gaseous streams in nuclear plant systems and components.

Maintains appropriate records, evaluates trends, develops new methods and trains new technicians.

Observes and applies industrial safety and radiation protection in strict compliance with applicable plant procedures and regulations.

(This is a leadership development position that may provide work direction to technicians and may perform limited duties of a supervisor on an as needed basis.)

Minimum Requirements

Chemistry Technician:

High school diploma or GED.

Basic knowledge of general chemical concepts, mathematics (including algebra and trigonometry), basic physics, laboratory techniques and practices required.

Good oral and written communication skills required.

Ability to follow written procedures.

Basic understanding of how nuclear power plants operate required.

A four-year Bachelors degree in a Science or Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university or Navy Nuclear Power Training highly desirable.

Chemistry Technician Sr:

A four-year Bachelor's degree in a Science or Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university plus two (2) years of working experience in Chemistry.

In lieu of a bachelor's degree, High school diploma/GED plus six (6) years of working experience Chemistry, of which one (1) year must be related technical training (or Navy Nuclear training may be substituted).

Must be qualified in accordance with Palo Verde's INPO accredited Chemistry Technician Qualification for Shift Technician.

(Meets or exceeds ANSI/ANS 3.1, 1978, 4.5.2.)

Nuclear requirement:

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.

Any PVNGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.

This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities.

These are conditions of employment at PVNGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Monitors, reviews and evaluates systems chemistry control conditions, and initiates the necessary treatment or adjustments to correct adversely-trending or out-of-specification conditions in a timely manner.

2) Reviews and evaluates systems chemistry and lubrication control conditions, and initiates the necessary notifications to correct adversely-trending or out-of-specification conditions in a timely manner.

3) Reviews analytical results for conformance to technical or operating specifications.

4) Interprets and performs short- term trends of radiochemical and chemical parameters, and prepares status reports.

5) Participates in and implements the laboratory analytical control program processes and procedures to ensure that valid analytical results are obtained and documented.

6) Provides direction and coordination for the daily work activities of less experienced technicians.

7) Participates in self-assessment, benchmarking and other Industry events seeking performance improvement opportunities.

8) Provides training, orientation and mentoring to less experienced technicians, especially in the areas of laboratory safety, analytical techniques and chemistry control program.

9) Provides assistance to radiological monitoring technician to ensure radiological program requirements are met.

10) Operates, calibrates, and maintains radiochemical analytical instrumentation, such as multi-channel gamma spectrophotometer and liquid scintillation counter as assigned.

11) Operates, calibrates, and maintains laboratory analytical instrumentation such as the atomic absorption spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, ion chromatograph, total organic carbon analyzer, ultraviolet (UV) visible spectrophotometer, on line monitors as assigned.

12) Participates in and successfully completes Station and Chemistry department training program requirements and seminars.

13) May assume the duties of the Chemistry Team Leader in their absence or as designated.

Plant/Field Role:

This position requires work to be performed in the field and/or at the work site, due to the nature of work.

Any PVGS employees may be called upon for random Fitness for Duty (FFD) testing during scheduled working hours. Employees, if off-site, must report to FFD at Palo Verde as soon as reasonably practicable, but no more than 120 minutes after being notified. Employees who are onsite when notified will have no more than 60 minutes to report after being notified.
