Old Dominion Freight Line Director - Accounting & Financial Reporting in Thomasville, North Carolina

The Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting is responsible for all aspects of external reporting, including preparation of financial statements and gathering supporting documentation for company’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the preparation of various internal financial reports. This role is also responsible for the month-close process of the company’s financial statements and oversees various accounting functions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate reporting and filing of all SEC reporting functions, including 10-K, 10-Q, earnings release, DEF 14A, 8-K, 11-K and iXBRL tagging

  • Responsible for the research and conclusion of new and proposed accounting, reporting and disclosure standards issued by the SEC and FASB including the preparation of memorandums regarding the company's position and impact to the financial statements

  • Communicate to executive management and the audit committee about how accounting complexities and evolving accounting guidance impact the financial statements

  • Manage the accounting month-end close process by reviewing general ledger accounts, company statistics and preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

  • Oversee the accounting general ledger functions by assuring accuracy, timelines, and conformity with professional accounting standards and best practices in accordance with GAAP

  • Maintain the financial reporting calendar to inform parties of necessary deadlines for the following processes: financial close, audit committee meetings, earnings releases, and all other public filings

  • Document, implement and ensure effective and practical implementation of corporate policies and internal controls

  • Ensure the company’s internal control procedures are followed and supported for SOX compliance

  • Serve as central point of contact for external and internal auditors and lead coordination during their audit procedures

  • Manage the communications with external audits on external financial statements and accounting issues to ensure auditor agreement with company decisions on accounting disclosures and issues

  • Work with departments daily such as operations, legal, payroll, tax, internal audit, human resources, and finance

  • Prepare a variety of reports for the CFO, which support decision-making, forecasting, and are presented to various stakeholders

  • Oversee the accounting for the fixed asset department, including the diesel fuel inventory process and company leased assets

  • Coordinate the annual actuarial process for insurance reserves

  • Oversee the accounting for compensation and benefits, such as stock-based compensation and other benefits including deferred compensation, vacation, and bonus payouts

  • Mentor and develop other accounting team members

  • Improve the function of accounting systems and processes

  • Support management with special projects and look to continuously improve the accounting and reporting workflow process

Job Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degree in Business, Accounting, or related field

  • CPA required

Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive SEC reporting experience

  • Extensive knowledge of SEC reporting and US GAAP

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize diverse tasks

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Demonstrates integrity and professionalism

  • Ability to research and reach well-reasoned conclusions on technical accounting issues

  • SOX and internal controls experience
