WM Senior Counsel, Legal in Texas

I. Job Summary

Serve as WM in-house counsel supporting field operations in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. Legal support provided by this position will be focused primarily on moderate to large, complex commercial/business matters. The position will also contribute to and interact with other staff as necessary on waste, recycling, and other facility development and permitting, public sector contracts, government and regulatory affairs, general environmental and regulatory matters, health and safety, and real estate. The position will manage commercial and regulatory litigation matters including the management of outside counsel, as well as support additional corporate transactions.

The position is located in Texas, in either the Houston, Austin, or Dallas-Ft. Worth areas.. Some travel will be required.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Provide proactive legal and practical business advice to internal Company management primarily at the regional (‘Area’) and local (‘District’) level;

  • Assist in preparing, reviewing, and negotiating legal documents on the Company’s behalf, including a variety of contracts and bid documents, and assist management in representing the organization in legal disputes and transactions;

  • Provide legal support on facility development, permitting, permit modifications, and administrative hearings and appeals;

  • Provide general legal support to Company sales force including contract preparation, review, and enforcement, and customer service and customer relations issues;

  • Provide general legal support and advice to collection, disposal, recycling, and related field operations;

  • Conduct risk assessments in connection with customer, vendor, operations, industry and/or business issues, and advise management on most appropriate response or action;

  • Manage outside counsel activities as necessary including determining effective business and legal strategy to address litigation and/or other specific operational needs;

  • Provide general legal support and advice on competitive concerns and general antitrust issues;

  • Advise Company personnel on corporate policies and procedures;

  • Ensure compliance with basic corporate formalities in the context of an enterprise consisting of numerous individual corporate entities;

  • Reinforce Company compliance culture and business principles including “success with integrity;”

  • Interface with numerous departments and functions within the Company to work effectively and provide a high-level of service to our business partners.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities

None at this time, but may supervise a paralegal located in the same or different office.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

Juris Doctorate and eight (8) or more years of previous relevant legal experience, including as in-house counsel, law firm practice, and/or governmental.

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Texas State Bar Licensure required.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Teams, Outlook, and other basic computer technology.
