Position Summary:

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) Research Strategy & Planning is responsible for the overall research strategy development, planning and coordination, performance and quality improvement, compliance evaluation, resource management, information systems, practice promotion, facilities management, and new business. opportunities, and communications for the EVP/CAO office as associated with developing strategic plans, policies, and recommendations. Also, work between the EVP/CAO office and affiliated healthcare partners on budget and research planning along with research planning and facilities management. The position will require progressive experience working with teams at the level of centers, institutes, and departments with an annual budget of over $100 million from multiple sources.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Develops strong relationships with the Deans at all UTHealth Houston schools, the Associate Deans for Academic Affairs, and Research offices, Associate Vice President for Sponsored Projects, CRU leadership, and partner hospitals for the advancement of UTHealth research institutes and research operations.

  • Develops and implements short- and long-term strategic research plans for the EVP/CAO office in association with research institutes and partners to achieve desired research and financial goals. May include work in partnership with departments on practice growth and other required initiative milestones for research initiatives.

  • Leads the research strategy and management process teams to establish new research institutes and/or help with long-term growth, including building continuous quality improvement processes towards a lean structure with minimal administrative burden to support a combination of basic, translational, educational, and clinical grants from Local, Regional, State, and National sources including foundations, industry, federal, and international agencies.

  • Innovates to maximize the quality of services while minimizing costs and increasing productivity. Develops effective, positive relationships across the organization in an interdisciplinary approach to lead, role model, collaborate, influence and effectuate change. Helps develop plans for the recruitment of research teams and resources to support EVP/CAO research goals.

  • Inspires and engages cross-collaborative teams to enhance communication, problem solving, and sharing of resources in support of EVP/CAO. Institutional operations, departmental and organizational goals. Develops a strong team through coaching, performance management, and team building.

  • Familiar with the management and operations of multiple centers, research practice sites and funding trends within multiple funding sources. These duties will include coordination between research, clinic, and education.

  • Develops metrics pertaining to quality, strategic goals, research cost and utilization.

  • Develops and maintains a sound plan of organization and establishes policies to ensure adequate management and succession for those functions. Includes maintaining open communication and positive working relationships with physicians to understand the research needs and how to support cross-function teams to promote the advancement of research, teaching and other academic missions.

  • Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  • Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • MD - Physician - State Licensure preferred

Minimum Education:

Doctorate Degree MD (Doctor of Medicine) or PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) required

Minimum Experience:

8 years of demonstrated experience in research development, grant and contract finance, multi-departmental operational experience, including HR, finance, and operations in an academic medical center required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
