Must have the following to apply:

  • Education - High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred
  • Experience - 6 months' experience in industrial construction preferred
  • Communication Skills:
    • Comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
    • Ability to understand information, ideas, direction and then be able to perform the task or project discussed
    • Ability to ask questions to insure you understand the information given
  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Ability to learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including steel inventories

**Job Description: An Iron Worker Helper is required to provide assistance to Structural Welders and Ship Fitters within our busy Shipyard with lay-out, installation, and assembly of shipyard components in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. At times a helper may be required to run errands, set up welding machines, retrieve items from the tool room, assist Iron Work employees with carrying tools, carry lift or gather materials or equipment, and in general "help" the Iron Working staff with their day-to-day duties and functions.

Duties and Responsibility:**

  • Assist ironworkers in laying out work. Learn to perform lay-out independently
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications. Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions
  • Follow established jobsite safety and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work area. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize hazards
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish ironworkers with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies
  • Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary; assist in lifting, positioning, and securing of materials and workpieces during installation; may perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities of journeyman's tools and equipment
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to assist ironworker to measure, cut, bend, fit and weld steel and help install all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications
  • Perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craftworker
  • Other duties may be assigned as required

Work Environment:

  • Employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment as needed to perform job tasks
  • Employee is regularly exposed to noise, dust, varying types of smells
  • Employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, must be able to use and handle toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, precarious places, and outside weather conditions
  • Employee is expected to work in a safe manner while maintaining a clean work area
