Syracuse University Part-time Instructor- IST628: Arrangement and Description of Archival Collections in Syracuse, New York
Job Description: IST628: an introduction to archival processing rooted in theory and best practice; this course will encompass how archival materials are arranged, described, and preserved. We will spend significant time on arrangement and description practices using Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) from the Society of American Archivists, and Encoded Archival Description (EAD). The class will consist of lectures combined with interactive discussion, and a comprehensive collections project. Collections work will be completed at the Noreen Reale Falcone Library, Le Moyne College
After taking this course, students will be able to:
· Explain the various points in the archival life-cycle where arrangement and description principles may be applied,
· Arrange materials according to archival principles, while preserving context among records organized into hierarchical levels,
· Demonstrate an ability to manage the distinctions between physical and intellectual control of archival materials,
· Apply professional standards for descriptive content and structure to an archival finding aid,
· Implement best practices for long-term storage of a variety of archival materials in appropriate containers and environments
