SUNY Upstate Medical University Outpatient Administrative Specialist in Syracuse, New York
Job Summary:
The Outpatient Administrative Specialist will perform standardized patient check-in and check-out procedures for a high volume of patients (in all registration areas within the hospital and off site) including registration activities such as entering and/or verifying demographic, insurance and/or financial information; generates routine forms and other documentation. Responsible for interviewing in-house patients through a bedside registration process to obtain demographic and financial information. Will inform patients of insurance benefits and provide estimate to patient of anticipated "out of pocket" costs of care. Will collect amount due or offer payment plan and/or provide information about financial assistance programs. The Outpatient Administrative Specialist will assist the Insurance Specialist in copay research, mailing patient letters and visiting patient in room to discuss copay. Will also assist the Admissions Coordinator with answering a large volume of phone calls regarding patient assigned in-house beds, patient information calls and where the patient's certificate is in the death process. OAS will assist the Ambassadors with visitor check-in. Acts as a liaison at department meetings and provides training to new employees in various roles within Patient Access. Audits registration quality of Hospital Patient Services Clerk 1 staff and provides education to fix errors. Also provides leadership to the Hospital Patient Services Clerk 1 staff when the supervisor is not available. Other duties required based on departmental needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate's degree and two years relevant patient financial/insurance experience in a healthcare related setting or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Working knowledge of medical terminology, familiarity with medical coding, and excellent written/oral communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of medical billing requirements and ability to recognize insurance fraud/abuse strongly preferred.
Work Days:
Primarily days: evenings, rotating weekends and holidays as needed
