Weyerhaeuser is searching for a Tree Improvement Forester to join our Southern Tree Improvement team! As a Tree Improvement Forester, your primary responsibilities will involve assisting in implementation of the breeding and archive strategies as well as supporting the growing, establishment, and management of genetic field tests in VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, and AL. This role reports to the Southern Tree Improvement Manager and is based out of the the Oliver Tree Improvement Center, which is approximately 18 miles from Sylvania, GA and Statesboro, GA

This is an individual contributor role who will flow to work as needed between the nursery, breeding and field-testing activities in support of Southern Tree Improvement.Additional responsibilities involve supporting the following activities: growing test seedlings for planting in the field, collection and storage of pollen and seeds, monitoring pine flower development and retention, crossing selected parents, seed orchard/clone archive maintenance, ensuring test sites are properly selected, site prepared, established, maintained, measured, and documented.

As a Tree Improvement Forester, you may work with key scientists, project leaders, and coordinators across all disciplines to support various research projects, so strong communication and coordination are essential. You will also be responsible for transferring technical information in a clear and concise manner to managers, early- and mid-rotation foresters, operational seed orchards, and other relevant parties. This transfer of information may be in the form of group presentations, field tours, and written reports.

Essential Job Functions

  • Support the Oliver Tree Improvement Facility and ensure assigned facility and equipment infrastructure are well maintained and in proper working order
  • Ensure all clone banks and breeding archives are maintained according to guidelines
  • Assist in implementing the breeding and archiving strategy and breeding research projects
  • Support the growing, establishment, and management of genetic field tests in assigned region primarily, but also across multiple disciplines within the Strategy & Technology (S&T) organization, other regions as necessary, and the business
  • Execute field work including site selection, study installation, maintenance, measurements, data audits and treatment application according to workplans
  • Herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer application management
  • Support other research trials as specified by the Tree Improvement Manager and may involve occasional weekend work
  • Support research on various aspects of silviculture, tree genetics, tree physiology, plant pathology and plant health related to genetics as needed
  • Coordinate research activities with other members of S&T as well as area foresters
  • Help scientists with transfer of information and technology and help troubleshoot technology implementation
  • Assist with data summarization and technical reports covering various aspects of progeny test and research results
  • Assist in preparation for field tours

  • Bachelors degree (or higher) in Tree Improvement, Forestry, or a closely related field

  • Good understanding of genetics and tree improvement, experimental design and the importance of data quality
  • Basic understanding of a broad range of core competencies including plantation nutrition, tree physiology, soils, growth and yield, and silvicultural systems.
  • Field forestry experience
  • Contract administration (both preparing contracts and managing the contractor)
  • Committed safety mindset, focused on safely executing work every day and supporting the company safety vision
  • Ability to work independently and safely, often in remote areas, prepared to do field intensive work
  • Knowledgeable of and licensed (or ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s license) in the use of herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer application
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time seasonally, sometimes 1-2 weeks at a time often requiring irregular work hours.This includes driving on highways, in-town, rural areas and on gravel/dirt roads across the various tree farms.
  • Ability to tow a trailer and obtain DOT certification
  • Ability to fulfill essential job functions that may require crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds, and repetitive activities such as entering data and sample preparation.
  • Willing and able to work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and on uneven working surfaces
  • Flexible availability regarding days and hours of work during seasonal activities
  • Excellent computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and GIS applications
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across technical disciplines and work well in team situations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Proactive problem-solving skills

What We Offer

Compensation:This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $66,703 - $100,055 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Paid Time Off or Vacation:We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours
