Position Summary...

What you'll do...

We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team and help us design the future. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will exercise technical leadership, expertise, and guidance to Search Runtime Platform team.

About Team:

Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.

What you'll do:

Search processes billions of queries for millions of products on Walmart sites and apps worldwide. Whenever a user types in a query or browses through product categories on the website, phone, or iPad, our service goes to work. We mine structured and semi-structured data from product catalogs, social web, transactions, query logs, etc. at an unprecedented scale. We work on big data problems, cutting-edge relevance algorithms from information retrieval, machine learning, and ranking to deliver a high-availability, low-latency service, which directly impacts business metrics.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead and direct large-scale, complex, cross-functional initiatives by reviewing project requirements and translating requirements into technical solutions. You will direct root cause analysis of critical business and production issues by reviewing and analyzing information (for example, issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause) and directing actions as designated in the plan. You will also be responsible for mentoring and guiding junior architects, ensuring that they are able to deliver high-quality work that meets the standards of our firm.

A successful person in this role will own major components of the Search Runtime platform and services, drive alignment with other teams, and guide architecture and technology choices within the team and across Search Technology pillars.

This is a hands-on role and so we are looking for an exceptional and experienced coder first. In addition, you will help us build systems that are fast, maintainable, and elegant. You will take on defining architecture, methodology and bring clarity to broadly defined problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in production support, including problem identification, ticket documentation, and customer and vendor relations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 8+ years of experience with building scalable, highly distributed, high performing, and robust Java applications

  • Extensive Java / JEE programming experience with a focus on server-side components

  • Proficient hands-on experience in debugging, troubleshooting, and performance tuning Java Application

  • Extensive experience in developing Web applications, Experience with Spring/SpringBoot framework

  • Experience with open-source search engines such as Solr, Lucene, or Elastic Search

  • Advanced scripting skills in at least one of the following: Python, Perl, or Shell and willingness to learn new technologies

  • Experience with continuous integration/deployment processes and tools such as Jenkins and Maven.

  • Experience with Code Quality Governance related tools (Sonar, Gerrit, PMD, FindBugs, Checkstyle, Emma, Cobertura, JIRA, etc)

  • Experience with Source Code Management Tools (GitHUB, SVN, CVS)

  • Advanced knowledge of complex software design, distributed system design, caching, design patterns, data structures and algorithms

  • Familiar with public cloud technologies in Azure and GCP

  • Ability to operate effectively and independently in a dynamic, fluid environment

  • Collaborate and work with a geographically diverse team of Product, Engineering, Business, and DevOps professionals.

  • Providing technical direction and expertise to the team.

  • Mentor and a guide mid-to-junior engineers on technical aspects of ongoing projects and initiate future projects.

  • Must be able and willing to think and act strategically and tactically

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00-$286,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
