Amazon Principal Software Development Engineer, Amazon Key in Sunnyvale, California

As a Principal Engineer, you'll be at the intersection of pioneering delivery solutions and advanced IoT technology, leading architectural decisions that impact millions of customer interactions daily.

Key job responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Lead architecture and design decisions for complex, cross-functional projects

  • Drive technical excellence across multiple teams through mentorship and knowledge sharing

  • Develop and implement pioneering solutions utilizing AI tools and cloud services

  • Contribute to intellectual property development through patents

  • Design and implement scalable systems using AWS services, CDK, Java, Python, and JavaScript

System Architecture & Innovation

  • Architect sophisticated solutions that meet scalability, performance, and reliability requirements

  • Translate complex product requirements into well-designed, maintainable systems

  • Evaluate and prototype new technologies to determine technical feasibility

  • Provide technical oversight for system interdependencies and limitations

  • Drive innovation in delivery and service technologies

A day in the life

  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, QA, and business stakeholders

  • Lead technical discussions and decision-making processes

  • Work effectively in an Agile/Scrum environment

  • Partner with Ring and other Amazon teams on cross-organizational initiatives

  • Mentor and guide technical career development across teams

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • Knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms

  • Extensive experience in distributed systems design and implementation

  • Deep expertise in cloud architecture, preferably with AWS

  • Strong programming skills in Java, Python, or JavaScript

  • Proven track record of leading complex technical projects

  • Experience mentoring and developing engineering talent

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Excellence in technical communication and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and building large-scale systems in a multi-tiered, distributed environment (Service Oriented Architecture)

  • Master's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • Experience with IoT devices and systems

  • Track record of patent contributions

  • Background in AI/ML technologies

  • Previous experience with delivery or logistics systems

  • Familiarity with Ring or similar consumer IoT platforms

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $180,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $311,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
