This position will support the receipt of instrument science data and the processing into various higher-level products with appropriate calibration along with distribution to various customers including the National Weather Service.

The position requires capacity to learn overall satellite systems engineering skills with emphasis applied in the areas of ground segment data engineering to collect space, climatic, atmospheric, terrestrial, solar geophysical, oceanographic and other environmental data from the space segment and transmit the data on a 24-hour continual operation basis. Candidate must possess excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and coordinate all data capture and distribution related engineering activities.

  • Support ground segment coordination of resources involving the data operations

  • Verification of nominal daily operation and performance.

  • Conduct operations regression or parallel testing and report results.

  • Coordinate and participate in ground software release regression and parallel testing to include monthly IT security patches.

  • Monitor ground system performance and respond to ground system anomalies during on and off duty hours.

  • Review and control proposed changes to the operational baseline using configuration management practices.

  • Develop, document and maintain operational procedures for the Satellite Operations Control Center (SOCC).

  • Analyze short term and long term trending to detect potential problems.

This position will support projects or engineering tasks related to the monitoring of instrument radiometric calibration and related to the investigation of anomalies in instrument performance and in the ground calibration software/algorithms. Perform near real time troubleshooting and analysis during radiometric anomalies, including the identification of the source of the anomaly as being with the instrument or in the ground L1b software, and providing advice on the resolution. Preparation of reports, and liaison with internal and external radiometric stakeholders.

The position requires knowledge of the basic statistics associated with radiation detection and data calibration. Candidate will learn, use, and help maintain sophisticated tools that have been specifically created to efficiently monitor the 16-channel imagery and the calibration data/parameters from the 7856 detectors within each GOES-R/ABI imager instrument. The candidate will participate in the operational validation of the tools and their interface with the ground segment. The position prepares and delivers presentations to colleagues and government representatives based on the results from these tools.

Position will co-develop and execute a methodology for identifying, classifying and implementing a set of best practices that can increase the quality of the data and product related ground segment data engineering and mission operations support services provided to OSPO.
