Summary This vacancy is for a GEOGRAPHER position in the Population Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other GEOGRAPHER, 0150-9/11/12, FPL GS-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience. Responsibilities Use geographic information systems (GIS), programming, and other geographic methods to identify, process, analyze, and compare geographic and demographic patterns. Design, develop, implement, analyze, and report on geographic data sets and projects using a variety of data analysis and programming methods. Develop and use GIS and other geographic methods to prepare spatial databases, map population patterns, and analyze results. Describe and analyze population data sets and results of studies of population patterns. Create technical presentations for meetings and conferences. Minimum Education Requirement: Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. or Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Specialized Experience: For the GS-09, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and programming in Python and R to analyze and edit geographic layers and demographic data sets; Assisting with the design and program techniques for geo-demographic data analysis and problem-solving; and Providing preliminary responses to geographic-oriented questions to program officials and the public. OR Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Specialized Experience: For the GS-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Utilizing and applying geographic information systems (GIS) and programming in Python and R to analyze and edit geographic layers and demographic data sets; ; Assisting with the design and program techniques for geo-demographic data analysis and problem-solving; Presenting research and technical results orally or in writing in meetings, conferences, and publications; and Providing advice and guidance to program officials and the public on geographic programs while keeping abreast of geo-demographic developments. OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and programming in Python and R to analyze and edit geographic layers and demographic data sets; Designing and implementing advanced techniques for geo-demographic data analysis and problem-solving; Overseeing projects relating to geographic and demographic data analysis; Presenting research and technical results orally or in writing in meetings, conferences, and publications; and Providing advice and guidance to program officials and the public on geographic programs while keeping abreast of geo-demographic developments. Education: Education cannot be substituted for specialized experience at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer. Education Additional Information If hired for this position with the Census Bureau, at its headquarters office located in Suitland, Maryland, you will be expected to temporarily telework to maximum extent while the headquarters building is being renovated. Once renovations are completed for your area, you will be notified when to return to the office. At that time, you will be expected to work from your duty station, and you may be eligible to telework, up to 8 days a pay period depending on your respective work schedule, with approval from your supervisor.
