Stony Brook University Postdoctoral Associate in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (of foreign equivalent) in Physics or a closely related field in hand by the start of the appointment. The incumbent should have experience in nuclear or particle physics broadly defined. Experience with different aspects of quantum computing and numerical simulations and their applications in the context of fundamental physics is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with machine learning tools such as generative modeling, collider phenomenology, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and searches of physics beyond the Standard Model is preferred.

Brief Description of Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform research in collaboration with Dr. Ringer, the Principal Investigator (PI), on a variety of topics in nuclear physics, with a particular emphasis on quantum simulations of lattice field theories as well as generative modeling of collider events to enable searches of physics beyond the Standard Model. The incumbent would also participate in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students on research projects.

  • Perform research in theoretical nuclear physics in collaboration with the PI. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to investigate real-time simulations of lattice field theories using novel techniques in quantum computing. The incumbent will be evaluated for his/her creativity, quantitative skills, and capabilities to clearly present the results of his/her work with scientific papers and seminars.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.
  • Present results of research at conferences and workshops.
  • Creatively generate new ideas to approach research topics to explore; develop and implement numerical methods which allow to quantify those ideas and make theoretical predictions which can guide future observations.
  • Assist PI with preparation and submission of applications for external research funding, progress reports to sponsors, publications.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
