Stony Brook University Postdoctoral Associate Stony Brook, New York
Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached CV and Research Statement)
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Experimental Nuclear or Particle (or connected fields) in Physics in hand by May 31st, 2025. Experience working on the physics of RHIC, JLab, LHC or HERA and on EIC. Interest or experience in supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in at least one of the following three: 1) using MC generators and Geant4 detector simulations, 2) experience in data analysis, 3) designing and construction of novel technologies for future experiments aimed at the EIC. Ability of working with theorists on QCD phenomenology.
Preamble:
Department of Physics and Astronomy intends to hire a post-doctoral fellows in the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science (CFNS fellows). CFNS was setup jointly by BNL and Stony Brook University in 2017 with generous support from the Simons Foundation and NY State to support the US Electron Ion Collider. The CFNS Fellows work in fields connected to the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and are given significant freedom in their activity working within the members of the CFNS and to choose and develop a scientific area within the overall scope of EIC physics, accelerator and detector design. CFNS has an excellent record of fellows graduating into permanent or potentially permanent scientific positions around the world. CFNS’s proximity to some of world leading nuclear & particle science groups at Stony Brook University, BNL and the Yang Center for Theoretical Physics; regular center activities such as workshops, weekly seminars and visitors program makes it an exciting environment for scientists interested in the EIC to work and flourish.
Brief Description of Duties:
The successful candidate will work at the CFNS – Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science (https://www.stonybrook.edu/cfns/) (under the supervision of Abhay Deshpande (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/physics/people/_profiles/deshpandea) or a supervisor suggested by him) primarily on topics associated with the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) including physics of EIC, the ePIC detector for the EIC using various Monte-Carlo generators and advanced detector simulation software. The Fellow could also work on future science, technology and detector design activities aimed at the 2nd EIC detector. In addition, the candidates are expected to work on one of the many ongoing and current research projects of the CFNS/Stony Brook group at RHIC (https://www.bnl.gov/rhic/) (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) and Jefferson Lab (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/nuclear-experiment/experiments/moller.html) .
The candidates will have an opportunity to propose and run Workshops which are funded by the CFNS. If interested they will have the possibility to learn and practice teaching skills in the classroom setting at Stony Brook University. CFNS is dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce. Candidates will be evaluated by a faculty committee appointed by the CFNS director.
The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
● Research on the science of EIC, detector design, and integration of various subsystems.
● Research on a current project at RHIC or JLab, with physics connections to the EIC.
● Presentation of the research results at various national and international conferences.
● Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental missions.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
