Stony Brook Medicine (Stony Brook University Hospital) Motor Vehicle Operator in Stony Brook, New York

Position Summary:

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Motor Vehicle Operators are primarily responsible for transporting our residents. They provide assistance to other departments by making deliveries and picking up supplies.

Duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator may include the following but are not limited to:

Will be responsible to drive approximately 75% of the time, ambulatory and wheelchair geriatric residents to and from appointments and trips.

Includes loading and unloading wheelchair, physically transferring adult residents in and out of wheelchairs as trained.

May be required to wait and stay with residents at clinical appointments, talking to them, willing to attempt to calm an agitated or disoriented resident, safeguarding their personal belongings.

25% of the time, Motor Vehicle Operator will perform transporter related duties, taking residents from their rooms to their appointments within the facility (no driving) and taking them back to their rooms, assisting with the wheelchair transfer as assigned.

May be asked to make deliveries or pick up supplies from vendors, post office, or drive staff.

Moves or carries cargo onto, into, and out of vehicles.

May be asked to assist laborers in delivery of supplies to nursing units.

Tends to the routine maintenance of vehicles including washing vehicles, changing tires, spark plugs and oil.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. Must have a driving record which is free from major violations. Candidates may be required to possess a CDL Class A, B, C or General D license. Must be at ease when conversing with elderly residents. Knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the vehicle in question. Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling. Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures. Ability in the operation of motor vehicles as required. Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possession of a NYS Commercial Drivers license with passenger endorsement for transport of 15 or more passengers, appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.

The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.
