Cloud Engineer

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume ):

Bachelor's Degree. In lieu of degree, seven [7] years of directly related full time experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling seven [7] full-time years may be considered. Three [3] years of full-time experience working with a public cloud provider such as Azure or AWS. Experience with infrastructure automation and IaC skills (i.e. Terraform). Experience with networking and security knowledge. Experience with cloud architecture design, implementation, and cloud security best practices. Experience with cost optimization and resource management. Experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting, high availability and disaster recovery planning. Experience with infrastructure monitoring, alerting, and storage management including backing up of cloud stored data.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree. Additional years of full time responsibilities working with information systems. Experience with IT Service management, data center, and servers. Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes). Experience with Python, Shell scripting, PowerShell scripting or similar languages. Experience with monitoring and logging tools. Experience with cloud infrastructure. Project Management experience.

Brief Description of Duties:

This position is responsible for the design, configuration, implementation, management, and support of cloud services used by the University. They will be primarily responsible for Email collaboration services, which are provided through Google but must also provide support for other services offered through the Google Apps Core Suite. They will also be responsible for Office 365 including SharePoint and OneDrive, Azure, VMware, and all cloud-related services managed by DoIT.

  • Cloud Services ManagementDesign and implement cloud architecture, manage cloud resources and costs. Oversee infrastructure automation, monitor system performance, and cloud services administration. Change Management and configuration management processes for cloud services. Effectively validate that planned changes were implemented accurately, ensuring error-free and appropriate configuration during release and deployment. Detect unplanned and/or unauthorized changes. Have visibility of critical changes/configuration changes that may impact the stability of the applications in the cloud. Contribute, implement and enhance security policies and procedures for cloud services. Implement system management tools to provide monitoring and management of all cloud infrastructure. Conduct system outage analysis to prevent the recurrence of incidents. Define and report key performance indicators (KPI) to monitor process health; define and report customer facing service metrics such as performance, availability and application monitoring in areas such as security, growth, and resource challenges. Be proactive in supporting a healthier cloud in the future by utilizing automation and proactive remediation services wherever possible, setting access control policies, monitoring security access, and creating appropriate monitoring profiles. Constantly improve all services and processes and implement new cloud services. In the performance of all job duties, at all times be responsible for delivering optimal customer service, for protecting institutional data and privacy, and the excellent delivery of solutions and services by following divisional and University policies, procedures, and processes.

  • Cloud Infrastructure Administration: Provide 24 x 7 support for private cloud infrastructure, including server, storage and networking.

  • Security & Compliance: Implement security controls, ensure compliance requirements, manage access controls, handle security incidents, ​disaster recovery and backup, DR planning and testing, backup strategy implementation, business continuity planning, system redundancy design(NE)

  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and department missions.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

SUNY implemented a hybrid telecommuting pilot program. This position has been approved to participate in the pilot, which allows for up to 5 remote days per pay period.
