Job Description

The Associate Director of Aquatics and Safety, reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, will manage the daily programming and maintenance operations of the 10,000 sq. ft. Aquatics Center, which consists of a 168,000-gallon indoor pool and a 62,000-gallon outdoor pool. The Associate Director of Aquatics and Safety will also oversee the Department of Campus Recreation's risk management.

This is an in-office position located in Stephenville, Texas. Work hours include Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm. This position requires a flexible work schedule and will require evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Additional hours may be required during peak periods. Must be able to work remotely at the request of the University.

30% Facilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the 10,000 sq. ft. Aquatic Center/Natatorium that features a 168,000-gallon lap pool and a 62,000-gallon outdoor leisure pool

  • Coordinate daily custodial efforts and maintenance of the Aquatic Center/Natatorium

  • Manage and evaluate all routine events, special events and rentals scheduled in the Aquatic Center/Natatorium

  • Ensure all routine preventative maintenance is being completed for all pools in both the pump room and on deck

  • Ensure all equipment in need of repair is reported, prioritized, and repaired in a timely manner for pools

  • Maintain the chemistry of Aquatic Centers and Natatoriums, including Total Alkalinity, Total Dissolved Solvents, Calcium Hardness, Chlorine, pH, Oxidation Reduction Potential, etc., to ensure balanced levels.

  • Maintain Aquatic Center/Natatorium heat, circulation, and filtration systems for both pools as well as HVAC systems

  • Maintain pool and maintenance equipment for Aquatic Center/Natatorium in addition to program materials for American Red Cross courses Develop procedures, protocols, and training to ensure safety of participants and staff

  • Implement and administer policies and procedures

  • Ensure facility and equipment replacement plans are implemented and updated

30% Programming/Risk Management:

  • Oversee the daily Risk Management Plan for the Department of Campus Recreation

  • Conduct monthly First Aid/CPR/AED classes for Campus Recreation staff, Tarleton community, and Stephenville area community

  • Conduct Lifeguard (Instructor) and/or Water Safety Instructor classes for Campus Recreation staff, Tarleton community, and Stephenville area community as needed

  • Collect, revise, and track all Incident Report forms and Report of Injuries for all program areas

  • Send monthly reminder emails to all program areas to ensure all certifications are up to date, AED maintenance is being completed, and everything is properly documented as such

  • Attend regular University Risk Management meetings

  • Conduct Safety meetings with program area Campus Recreation professional staff on a monthly basis

  • Create and run Learn to Swim and other Aquatic programs

  • Conduct semesterly trainings on safety protocols for all Campus Recreation staff

  • Coordinate aquatics promotion to campus via a variety of platforms including but not limited to social media, flyers, bulletin boards, tabling, and videos

  • Directs the development of timely and accurate program related marketing and communications; produces and ensures distribution of appropriate information to promote programs and services.

20% Student Supervision and Staff Development:

  • Schedule all lifeguard staff, maintenance staff, lifeguard instructors and swim instructors

  • Conduct routine meetings/orientations for all aquatic staff, which include but are not limited to weekly meetings with student leadership, weekly in-service trainings and semester skills testing and orientations

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule and mentor aquatic staff (approximately 20, many also certified as WSI or LGI)

  • Reviews and approves student employee timesheets and oversees scheduling of student staff.

  • Provides leadership and effective management to ensure goals and objectives are attained

  • Facilitate weekly lifeguard in-service trainings in addition to monthly LGI and WSI in-services

  • Update and maintain performance plans and reviews for Aquatic staff (swim instructors, lifeguard, head lifeguards, Graduate Assistant)

  • Conduct semesterly refresher classes/drills in coordination with program area professional staff to go over certification topics

10% Administration:

  • Directly monitors revenue and expense; provides reports and projections.

  • Creates and submits Purchase Orders for Aquatics items within approved annual budget.

  • Uses complied program statistics, data and reports to maintain or make appropriate program and service adjustments.

  • Implement annual assessment for Aquatics Center and Safety Classes that includes 3-year data trend collections, and Aquatic Center Surveys

  • Maintain usage and statistical data for all programming, including but not limited to patron usage at all pool events/clinics, American Red Cross courses, clinics, special events, etc.

  • Purchase and maintain inventory for safety equipment, American Red Cross courses, and more

10% Other:

  • In accordance with the Division of Student Engagement and Success/Department of Campus Recreation Strategic Plan, other duties as assigned

  • This position requires a flexible work schedule which at times will require frequent attendance during evenings, weekends and some holidays; Additional hours may be required during peak periods.

    Education and Experience:

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Eight years of related experience.

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation Administration, or related field with six years related experience; including thorough knowledge of campus recreation as demonstrated by a minimum of 2 years of full-time employment in a college or University level campus recreation program.

  • College/university aquatics experience

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguard certifications

  • Thorough knowledge of campus recreation as demonstrated by a minimum of 2 years of full-time employment in a college or University level campus recreation program.

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification preferred.

    Certifications:

  • Past experience and/or certification in AFO or CPO or obtained within the first 90 days of hire

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or obtained within the first 90 days of hire

  • Lifeguard instructor certifications or obtained within the first 90 days of hire

  • Water Safety Instructor certification or obtained within the first 90 days of hire

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification or obtained within the first 90 days of hire

Salary:

Commensurate with experience

The target base annual salary is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
