MAINTENANCE WORKER

Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an experienced Maintenance Worker for our City Sanctuary Facility for Families w/ Children in Staten Island, NY. As the Maintenance Worker, you will play a pivotal role in our organization, performing essential repairs, maintenance tasks, and improvements at our facility to maintain a safe environment for our families. Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure facility systems continue to operate efficiently and the physical condition of the site does not deteriorate.

  • Effectively handle service requests and work orders.

  • The ability to assess issues with electricity, plumbing, HVAC’s and other equipment in order to make a recommendation so that vendors could effectively address and resolve the problem.

  • Ability to perform skilled painting and sheetrock work, including patching and finishing.

  • Identify and report facility deficiencies or needs to the supervisor; and/or vendors,

  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment safely and efficiently.

  • Assist with unit inspections.

  • Must know about plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and drywall repairs.

  • Familiar with the proper use of power tools.

  • Performs limited grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming lawns and hedges and cleaning snow from sidewalks.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in general maintenance.

  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift to 60 pounds.

  • Be able to stand for long periods.

  • Capable of performing duties with limited supervision.

  • Availability to work a flexible schedule.

  • Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish strongly preferred.
