Responsibilities:

The General Manager (GM) oversees the Red Barn Student Equestrian Center, reporting to the Executive Director. The GM will supervise the staff of grooms, facility service providers, and run the facility's day-to-day operations, including payment and record keeping of boarders. The GM is also responsible for all elements of Horse Care for the Stanford herd. Some weekends and evenings will be required.

Duties Include:

BARN FACILITY MANAGEMENT

  • Inspect the facilities monthly for any operations, maintenance, janitorial, and safety issues, and facilitate corrective practices if needed.

  • Act as the liaison for all operations-related service providers, including landscaping, electricians, Stanford Operations, and others, as needed.

  • Develop, update, and follow maintenance schedules for facilities, including managing the agreed annual ongoing maintenance budget. Identify emergency vs. periodic maintenance and schedule with appropriate service (facilities technician, buildings and grounds, etc.).

  • Assess and schedule stall repairs with internal staff or Athletics facilities (and bill for them) (with ED), managing facility repair services

  • Develop and maintain/update the list of vendors

  • Updated stall cards in place

  • Work with ED on capital planning (scheduling and budgeting for needed long-range repairs like roof, fencing, and new footing)

  • Oversee custodial management, including trash, manure, recycling, bathroom, and office

  • Landscaping needs (weeding, tree pruning)

  • Rodent management in buildings and arenas

  • Ensure arenas are correctly watered, groomed, and maintained

  • Ensure vehicle management and maintenance is completed

OFFICE AND SUPPLY MANAGEMENT

  • ​​Check office voicemail and return calls. Receive and respond to email inquiries as appropriate.

  • Maintain the general organization of the office and its operations.

  • Order shavings and schedule unloading (including specialty safety training for staff)

  • Ensure manure removal (via PSSI) happens in a timely fashion

  • Vendors: out to bid annually to ensure best pricing (with ED)

  • Source hay, assure constant availability, and work with Procurement to set up new payees (with ED)

  • Monitor feed consumption and order feed as needed

  • Order/manage other barn and office supplies (rakes, etc.)

BOARDER MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain up-to-date financial, boarder, and horse records, including vaccines, boarding contracts, releases, and related administrative duties.

  • Receive shot records for new boarders (FILE, Backup to ED)

  • Collect and maintain payment records for monthly board payments

  • Interact with Boarders as needed

  • Work feed changes with Boarders, pass instructions to the Groom Coordinator, and ensure changes are followed

  • Communication with resident trainers as needed

  • Communicate with the Coaching staff, updating the monthly list of boarders with the Program Director (and receiving a monthly list of SRA riders)

STAFF MANAGEMENT (some Spanish language and/or willingness to learn)

  • Manages Stablehands, creating, implementing, and managing daily staff, schedules, and their duties.

  • Oversees Stablehand deliverables and their day-to-day care of the horses and facilities.

  • Duties include direct supervision, scheduling, training, completing payroll and offering staff development.

  • Act as the liaison between the Executive Director and DAPER human resources for hiring, performance management, and staff development needs.

HORSE CARE AND MANAGEMENT (STANFORD HERD)

  • Oversee bi-annual vaccine administration and keep records of shots and injections

  • Keep records and oversee regular shoeing

  • Call vets for regular checkups

  • Veterinary emergencies –primary contact

  • Supply management (inventory, tack cleaning, stirrup pads)

  • Horse Donation: insure vet check, stall location, tack, and feed

  • Organize horses going on the walker and turnout (daily)

  • Track horse care expenses vs. budget with ED

  • Coordinate rehab and return to work with vets, and delegate rehab care and return to work with coaches, horse manager, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Previous management experience, including supervising staff

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) Spanish required

  • A strong working knowledge of stables operations and a basic understanding of equine management are required

  • Clear communication style and the ability to work with many different personality types successfully

The expected pay range for this position is $82,603 to $90,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of Stanford’s intercollegiate athletics program and for the reputation of Stanford University. Program Summary

The Red Barn will offer a variety of equestrian related services to the Stanford University community. The Red Barn facility will run as a Stanford Athletics Facility. Services will be provided in a tiered system, focused on Stanford students first, then the Stanford community (faculty, staff and alumni) and then finally its local community.
