This position serves our partners at the Department of Corrections (DOC). The MNIT DOC team runs many unique applications that manage the information and security of the department, supporting 4,500 employees across 10 prisons and 50 field offices located throughout the state.

*This position is temporary and includes full state fringe benefits; it is anticipated to last up to three (3) years.

Embark on an exciting career as an entry-level Systems Engineer with Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) and the Department of Corrections (DOC)! In this role, you’ll ensure the stability, security, and efficiency of critical IT systems that support the DOC’s operations, from business and institutional functions to cutting-edge security technologies. Working alongside MNIT Enterprise teams and under the guidance of the Facility Technology Supervisor, you’ll troubleshoot complex issues, provide technical support to end users, and collaborate with System Technicians and Administrators to keep operations running seamlessly.

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:

  • Telework (https://mn.gov/mmb-stat/policies/1422-telework.pdf) for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in St. Paul, Minnesota.

  • Incumbents will be required to travel to correctional facilities on a quarterly basis, or as business needs and other dependencies require.

  • Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience with computer technologies, server support, and networking.

Experience must include:

  • Ticketing systems

  • Knowledge of Active Directory Management or other LDAP based solutions.

  • Knowledge in Cloud services, such as AWS or Azure.

  • Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.

  • Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.

A bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for two (2) years of experience, OR an IT or related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Group Policies (GPO), Active Directory Authentication, Domain Name System (DNS), and firewalls experience.

  • Experience in Microsoft Azure cloud computing to design, manage, and maintain log analytics, configuration of networks, Hypervisors, load balancing, and automations.

  • Knowledge of Installation, configuration, and functionality of Active Directory/server-based productivity application suites (Active Directory Services, LDAP, DNS and GPO)

  • Knowledge of Cisco Umbrella, Cisco ThousandEyes and Solarwinds applications.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the physical ability to move and lift various devices and technologies, with responsibilities that may include transporting equipment between multiple locations, whether within a single site or across different agency sites. The role may involve lifting and placing items weighing up to 40 lbs. onto overhead storage shelves, as well as accessing and working in confined spaces, such as beneath desks. These tasks will be performed within a Minnesota Correctional facility, where strict adherence to safety protocols and an understanding of the facility’s unique environment are imperative. Moreover, candidates will be required to complete a Minnesota Department of Corrections Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions Worksheet, ensuring compliance with both Minnesota Department of Corrections and MNIT Services policies.
