The Commerce, Elections, and Trades Division is seeking a paralegal. The division represents a broad range of state agencies and boards and handles litigation in state and federal courts and at the Office of Administrative Hearings. The division performs meaningful and challenging work that makes a difference in the lives of Minnesotans. To support the division’s work, a paralegal’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Drafting pleadings
Support attorneys in all phases of discovery, including but not limited to drafting and responding to discovery requests; obtaining, reviewing, summarizing, and redacting documents; using e-discovery platforms; and supporting attorneys in depositions
Interviewing witnesses
Preparing exhibits for hearings and trials
Supporting attorneys during hearings
Conducting legal research as needed, including legislative history
Cite-checking documents
Assisting in file management and facilitating document transfers from clients
Drafting reports to clients and for other administrative purposes
This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of formal paralegal or legal assistant coursework from an accredited program which resulted in a program certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree OR equivalent experience as a paralegal or legal assistant
Three or more years of experience working in a litigation setting as a paralegal or equivalent paraprofessional legal support position
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate:
Knowledge of court procedures, legal terminology, legal document formatting, and proper citation formats;
Strong writing and editing skills;
Outstanding research and analytical skills;
Strong organizational and time-management skills, and an ability to identify and address priorities;
Proven ability to:
Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information;
Multi-task by managing an active caseload and meeting tight deadlines;
Contribute positively to a team and interact successfully with clients and members of the public;
Work in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment; and
Show excellent judgement, character, and work ethic.
To be considered at the Legal Assistant 6 (LA6) level applicants must have at least 6 or more years directly related experience. To be considered at the Legal Assistant 7 (LA7) level applicants must have at least 12 or more years directly related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with administrative agencies in Minnesota
Trial or evidentiary hearing experience
Experience with discovery-management platforms
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move and transport such articles as files, IT equipment, and resource materials weighing up to 20 pounds
