JOB TITLE: Orientation Leader
LOCATION: St. Paul Campus
PAYRATE: $16.00
JOB SUMMARY
Each year , approximately 1,300-1,700 new students attend the University of St. Thomas. New Student Orientation and Registration (O&R) aims to assist students and families with the ir transition to college. In addition, we strive to benefit the Orientation Leaders (OLs) in their own personal, academic, and professional development.
The Orientation Leader (OL) position is critical in facilitating the transition of new students entering the St. Thomas community. Serving as an OL is a highly visible role that offers an opportunity to develop your leadership skills and serve our community simultaneously. Through a robust training schedule and the implementation of the orientation programs, OLs gain significant experience in public speaking, teamwork, communication, and planning while also learning more about themselves.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSSpecific Position Expectations include:
Act as a positive role model and resource to new students and their guests/families.
Guide new students through their summer Orientation and Registration (O&R) transition.
Facilitate small group breakout sessions with new students throughout summer and Welcome Days programs.
Participate in other Welcome activities as needed.
Maintain communication with new students throughout the summer and into the beginning of the fall semester with guided instruction.
Build a working knowledge of the campus and community support services available to students and their guests/families.
Engage with incoming students throughout the summer utilizing various virtual communication methods, including email and Canvas postings, in addition to the in-person requirements.
Training & Required Dates You must be able to attend all training sessions and other required dates noted below.
Orientation Leader Training:
June 3, 10, 17
July 1, 8
There will be two evening trainings in April, and one in May. The dates for those trainings will be based on the Orientation Leaders’ availability.
O&R Session Dates 2025:
July 9, 11, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 28
August 15 , 26
September 2
Summer Engagement:Throughout the summer, OLs will be expected to engage with incoming students utilizing a variety of virtual communication methods, including email, Canvas posting, in addition to the in-person requirements.
Welcome Days: OLs are expected to work as Welcome Days Leaders during the fall before classes (August 26-September 2).
Hours for this position are contingent on business needs and are subject to fluctuation throughout the employment period. Changes to campus operations may impact this position’s scheduling and/or necessity.

In addition to exceptional experience in leadership, public speaking, active listening and teamwork, OLs are paid at a rate of $16.00/hour.
Hours for this position are contingent on business needs and are subject to fluctuation throughout the employment period. Changes to campus operations may impact this position’s scheduling and/or necessity.
Hours (anticipated):
Summer Training is paid, starts the first week of June, and will typically be one day per week (Tuesdays) for 6-8 h ours .
Summer engagement outside of training and O&R sessions will be limited to 1-3 hours a week.
During O&R session weeks , hours range from 16 to 35 hours per week.

On-Campus Housing:
Leaders interested in on-campus housing during orientation in July will have their housing costs for that month covered.
Leaders choosing to live on campus continuously from the end of the spring term through August will receive the following benefits:
- June: Two days of paid housing each week.
August: Two days of paid housing: August 14 and 15.
- Important Note: Students are responsible for any housing costs incurred outside of these specified dates (July and the subsidized weeks in June and August).
Additionally, should campus operations change and require this work to be completed remotely, we may pivot to provide this work in a remote/virtual fashion. Due to taxation issues and employment law, only individuals residing in and completing the work in the State of Minnesota would be eligible to do that work remotely/virtually.

Be a currently full-time, enrolled, baccalaureate undergraduate St. Thomas student returning in the fall.
Be in good standing, both academically and disciplinary, with the University.
An OL may take a class or work another job during the summer of employment as an OL. Any potential conflicts must be discussed and approved by position supervisors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Exceptional communication skills; in-person, virtual, written, verbal, and non-verbal.
Strong commitment to equity and inclusion, and experience working with diverse populations.
Interest in serving new students and their guests/families.
Ability to positively represent the University.
Team-oriented approach to work.
Willingness to be both a teacher and a learner.
Have a preferred minimum 2.50 grade point average.
