The Indigenous Cultural Engagement Intern will serve in the office of Behavioral Health Administration, providing support to the American Indian Team. The Minnesota Department of Human Services (MN DHS) Behavioral Health American Indian Division (AI BHD) is seeking an Intern to support its mission of providing resources and developing policies that benefit American Indian families, children, communities, and Tribal Nations in Minnesota. Through cultural engagement and collaboration with American Indian partners, a major goal for the AI BHD is to promote sustainable systemic changes that will benefit Native communities. The ideal candidate has lived experience in a Tribal Nation or Urban Indian community or a strong passion and experience working within these settings. Ideally, the candidate will have knowledge of working with substance use and mental health in Indian Country. They should also have an interest in data collection, resource development, and culturally centered engagement. This internship is a unique opportunity to support systemic change and make a meaningful difference in the lives of American Indians, residing in Tribal Nations or in urban areas.

Some responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Plan, develop, track, analyze and organize data collection systems involving Natives with substance use and mental health issues in American Indian communities.

  • Update and enhance the American Indian Team’s online presence involving mental health and substance use in Indian Country to enhance resources for internal and external partners.

  • Assist in planning and supporting the 2025 American Indian Substance Use Disorder Summit, including collecting and compiling relevant data for the event. Post event will assist in compiling and analyzing data gathered during the event into an American Indian Substance Use Report to include a summary with graphs, recommendations, and any action steps going forward.

  • Collaborate with team members to support the provision of technical assistance and help to foster mutual partnerships with American Indian tribal and urban communities.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:

You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; or recently graduated December 2024 or May 2025

AND

  • Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner

  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred majors include: Human Services, Social work, Indian Studies, Sociology or Health Administration.

  • Lived experience in a Tribal Nation or Urban Indian community or a strong passion and experience working within these settings.

  • Interest in data collection, resource development, and culturally centered engagement.

  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding substance use and/or mental health in Indian Country.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)

  • Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment

  • Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship

  • Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
