University of St. Thomas Diversity Activites Board Student Intern in St. Paul, Minnesota

OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

The DAB Interns are student intern positions within Student Diversity and Inclusion Services (SDIS). They are supervised by the Assistant Director of Engagement and Education in Student & Diversity Inclusion Services.

The positions will serve as an acting catalyst for dialogue and will create educational programming around the areas of diversity, social justice and global perspectives. Through workshops, activities and programs for students at St. Thomas, the SDIS -DAB student intern will actively promote an intellectual co-curricular experience to help students better understand and have meaningful dialogue about diversity, social justice and global perspectives. The SDIS-DAB student intern will promote respect for commonalities and differences in historical and cultural context and will encourage civic and social responsibility within the St. Thomas campus community.

Please note: The DAB intern selected for this position will hold these leadership roles:DAB coordinator,Gathering Circle LiaisonandQmmunity Coordinator.

GENERAL POSITION REPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

All DAB positions are required to do the following within the academic year:

  • Attend interns’ collaboration meetings and bi-weekly check-in meetings with the supervisor.

  • Attend and support SDIS, MLC and collaborated events and activities as needed.

  • Abide by all University policies and procedures.

  • Serve as a role model and leader on campus.

  • Complete necessary budget, advertising and post event forms.

  • Work approximately 8-12 hours per week.

  • Actively promote SDIS resources and events to the St. Thomas campus community.

  • Attend DAB Retreat in August and spring trainings to increase intercultural development, anti-bias strategies, leadership skills, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Attend SDIS Intern semester retreat to foster community and team building connection.

  • Support administrative task and greet visitors at SDIS.

  • Answer phone calls and inquires as needed.

  • Serve as an ambassador for SDIS to visiting students and community members.

  • Complete SDIS Canvas during on-boarding.

  • Complete IDI Training twice within the school year and two follow up debriefs.

    This role can take on multiple leadership roles as assigned. Each DAB intern will represent DAB and multicultural student experiences and perspectives in the following appointed role(s):

  • DAB Undergraduate Student Government Representative (USG)

  • Represent DAB at the USG weekly meeting happening on every Thursday from 1-2pm.

  • Manage the SDIS monthly newsletter with supervisor on DAB and Qmmunity event. Addition to job/internship, scholarships, and other opportunity for students.

  • Communicating specific DAB and Qmmunity monthly events planned with USG members to increase awareness of DAB and Qmmunity events.

  • Build relationship with USG members on collaboration for events throughout the school year.

  • USG Intercultural Affairs Representative

  • Represent and speaks about their understanding of multicultural student groups experience and diverse needs during USG weekly meeting.

  • Collaborate with USG VP of Equity and Inclusion on multicultural student group’s needs, concerns, and questions.

  • Setting up meeting with VP of Equity and Inclusion

  • Partners with to co-chair the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and participate in one additional committee.

  • Connect with SDIS Director and Assistant Director of Student Success and Retention on current BIPOC student climate to report to USG.

  • Communicates to the USG on any Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee affairs.

  • Communicates with the Interfaith Council Liaison.

  • Multicultural Leadership Council (MLC) Representative

  • Assist/Plan the semester retreats and monthly meetings for all 9 Multicultural clubs and QSA club.

  • Lead facilitation the semester retreats and monthly meetings.

  • Foster an environment of relationship building and cross-cultural and intersectional approach to collaboration among the MLC clubs.

  • Communicate with external and internal stockholders for MLC semester retreats and monthly meetings.

  • Gathering Circle Liaison

  • Collaborate with the Center for Well-Being on Tommie Link and social media marketing.

  • Assist/Plan Tommie Link for the Gathering Circle monthly meetings.

  • Attend the Gathering Circles to acquire and participate in the questions and concerns of BIPOC students.

  • Dougherty Family College (DFC) Liaison

  • Collaborate with DFC Student Activities Board (SAB) on events to provide opportunity for DFC scholars to integrate into the St. Paul campus and Twin Cities communities.

  • Attend SAB bi-weekly meeting to discuss monthly event’s sponsor by DAB.

  • Represent DAB and Communicate specific DAB and Qmmunity events to SAB to encourage DFC scholars’ participation.

  • Purple Couch Coordinator

  • Assist/Plan weekly Friday purple couch base on student interest: hot topic, political, heritage and history month theme, etc.

  • Collaborate with departments and student clubs on purple couch topics.

  • Inventory on purple couch snacks and beverages.

  • Communicate with supervisor and office coordinator on marketing materials.

  • Qmmunity Coordinator

  • Build authentic relationships with first- and second-year students to promote the Qmmunity program, support transitions, and connect second-year students with campus resources.

  • Educate undergraduates about the Qmmunity support opportunities.

  • Raise awareness of Qmmunity events through outreach, tabling, and collaboration to foster community and inclusion for LGBTQIA2S+ students.

  • Collaborate with the Center for Well-Being to hold and attend qmmunity connections gatherings

  • DAB Program Coordinator

  • Organize various informational fairs including Orientation fair, activities fair, and others as needed.

  • Serve as the main point of contact for collaboration efforts with campus partners on campus.

  • Plan and implement heritage month programs through, DAB in the Cities, Movies That Matter, etc.

  • Create and facilitate workshops and programs on diversity, inclusion, social justice and global perspectives on issues such as relating to social identities, current events, and/or aligning with heritage themed months.

  • Identify various opportunities to support leadership development, cultural heritage programming, social justice educational efforts, and diversity and inclusion promotion/training.

  • Provide administrative support related to DAB budget and DAB post-program evaluations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualitfications:

  • A enrolled as a full time undergraduate students at the University of St. Thomas.

  • Great Communication and organization skills.

  • Must be able to work maximum 12 hours per week.

  • Must be able to work some weekends and or late hours.

  • A collaborative team player.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
