The Controls Application Engineering Leader is responsible for leading a team of Controls Application Engineers. These Engineers collaborate with Product Management and Engineering Development teams to deliver new products by assuring customer and business needs are satisfied.

You and your team will be directly involved with product development priorities, design details, and commercialization of HVAC Controls products. Your influence and ownership of this work drives better customer experiences, technician effectiveness, and sustainable business practices for Trane and its customers. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite per week) based out of St. Paul, MN .

Responsibilities:

Team Leader – approximately 70% of role

  • Function as the primary liaison between the Controls Application Engineering team and other organizational teams (including Product & Portfolio Management, Technical Support & Publications, Engineering, Sales & Operational teams).

  • Facilitate the growth and maturity of the team and individual members.

  • Set and track progress against goals for the overall team and individual members.

  • Identify and remove roadblocks that slow the progress of team members.

Individual Contributor – approximately 30% of role

  • Serve as subject matter expert, primary decision maker, and owner of a controls project through the full development life cycle. Advocate customer and business needs and resolve technical, schedule, resource, and business constraints.

  • Compile and analyze customer and business needs with Product Management teams based on market research, competitive analysis, business strategies, and product roadmaps.

  • Conduct voice of customer activities with User Experience teams to identify customer, user, and business needs based on formal and informal activities.

  • Collaborate on product roadmaps and strategy with product management teams.

  • Author product requirements and build common understanding with engineering development and validation teams.

  • Author and review engineering documentation including System Requirements Documents, Feature Functional Documents, User Interface Design Documents, and Test Plans.

  • Collaborate with User Experience teams to develop user scenarios, user stories, personas, tasks flows, performance measurements, and usability tests.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams on concepts and feasibility for product designs.

  • Support product acceptance testing to ensure product requirements and user needs are satisfied.

  • Manage field trial testing to ensure product operates successfully in varied systems and real building environments prior to official release.

  • Support development of training modules, webinars, and user literature.

  • Present value propositions and feature overviews of products and systems in customer visits.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in HVAC, Engineering, or related field is required.

  • Without a degree, at least 7 years of experience with Trane HVAC and/or controls is required.

  • 5 years of experience in HVAC, Controls, or related building technologies is required.

  • Ability to work regularly, dependably, independently, and accountably in a corporate culture is required.

  • Strong communication skills are required, including:

  • Highly technical topics to non-technical audiences.

  • User & business needs to highly-technical audiences.

  • Updates to corporate stakeholders, sales offices, and end customers.

  • Strength in several forms – including written, verbal, and presentation skills.

  • Capability to think critically - in decision making, organizing many topics, prioritizing work to align with business objectives, and generally exercise good judgment is required.

  • Desire to identify, embrace, and drive organizational improvements is required.

  • The ability to cope with stress, change and pressure while maintaining a pleasant and cooperative manner is required.

  • Previous team leadership – driving positive team engagement, personal growth, and accountability to team goals is greatly preferred.

  • Experience with new product development in hardware or software is greatly preferred.

  • Knowledge of building industry or facilities management experience with HVAC or BAS knowledge is preferred.Knowledge of modern Connected Building (including modern communication technologies (eg. IP, Cellular), Web Services/IoT, and Cyber Security, is preferred.

Base Pay Range: $130,000 – $160,000

Additional Compensation: Total compensation for this role also will include an incentive plan.
