Course Description: ART 261 Ceramics I Semester Dates: Fall 9/3/2024 to 12/18/2024 and Spring 1/6/2025 to 4/30/2025 Class Dates/Times: Tuesdays 1:02pm-2:30pm, Thursdays 1:12pm-2:30pm This introductory studio course is designed to familiarize beginning students with the fundamental techniques and concepts of contemporary ceramic art. Students will see and also investigate sculptural and vessel forms in clay, along with the relationship of drawing to the creative process. Although significant clay art history and technology will be taught, learning will be assessed primarily through portfolio production and review. Course Modality: PSEO On-Site at Concordia Academy, Face-to-Face Pre-Written Course: Yes Total Compensation: $1,000 per Credit # of Credits: 3 per Course Program/College: School of Continuing Studies, PSEO Creativity in visual arts offers a meaningful way for students to express their thoughts, feelings, and appreciation for God's creation. Art classes at Concordia Academy are designed to give students opportunities for that expression while growing in skills, learning new techniques, and gaining confidence. As part of the partnership with Concordia University in St. Paul (CSP), Concordia Academy offers various college-level art classes taught on campus by CSP professors. The Academic year for students in these college classes has often culminated with a major exhibit at the Concordia Galleries of Concordia University, St. Paul. Some past exhibits have featured over 200 pieces of work by CA students. Major displays of student work are a key piece of Christmas and spring concerts. Students also participate in the Skyline Conference Fine Arts Festival, the District 4A Art Festival, and other festivals and competitions. The academic year for students in college art classes often culminates with a major exhibit at the Concordia Galleries of Concordia University, St. Paul. CA art students have often taken first or second place in the District 4 Congressional Art Competition, resulting in their work being displaced in congressional buildings in Washington, DC. Course Instruction Responsibilities: Guide students on including appropriate content (activities, artifacts, evidence) for the candidate's digital portfolio, demonstrating that required competencies in the Minnesota Administrator Rule have been successfully met. Review and, if necessary, guide students based on weekly internship experience logs received from candidates. Provide the Site Mentor with a copy of the Summative Evaluation Form to be completed and returned to the University Supervisor at the end of the internship experience. Guide students in completing the internship reflection. Collect and review the log reflecting 320 hours of internship experiences to meet the requirements outlined in Minnesota Administrator Rule 3512. Be familiar with the content and guidelines outlined in the Internship Experience/Situational Observation Internship Resource Website. Attend University Supervisor meetings scheduled by the Education Leadership Program. Qualifications: Education Required: Completion of BFA in Studio Art or Art History from an accredited institution plus a minimum of 5 years professional level accomplishments in the arts. Education Preferred: Completion of MFA in Studio Art or a BFA plus professional achievement that provides a depth of knowledge in the field to include evidence of a professional level of accomplishment in the arts. Experience Required: Experience as a practicing artist or art industry professional with a minimum of one or more years of college-level teaching experience. Applicants should be able to showcase a portfolio of work. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate a motivation to serve students from all backgrounds and educational experiences, demonstrate an ability and motivation to work with diverse populations in a professional and personable manner, demonstrate an ability to anticipate and respond to new trends in the discipline with new curriculum and teaching practices. Experience Preferred: Teaching high school level students.
