Job Description

Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor for the Master of Science in Co-occurring Disorders Recovery Counseling. This is a full-time, fixed-term position within the Human Services Department and will start on August 18, 2025.

Responsibilities

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to teach graduate-level substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders counseling courses effectively to a post-traditional student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.

  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.

  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.

  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.

  • Engage in service to the university and community.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.

  • Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral degree in counselor education or related discipline.

  • Current unencumbered professional practice credential in substance use or mental health counseling.

  • Demonstrated interest in faculty position that prioritizes teaching and emphasizes teaching excellence.

  • A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.

  • Effective communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students and colleagues who are culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse.

  • Specific Technical, Computer, and/or Software skills (as needed).

Preferred Qualification

  • Earned doctoral degree in counselor education from a doctoral program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

  • Current unencumbered professional practice credentials in both substance use and mental health counseling.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.

  • Experience developing course curricula at a post-secondary institution.

  • Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.

  • Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.

  • Experience as an academic advisor for students at post-secondary institution.

Description of College/School/Unit: The College of Community Studies and Public Affairs (CCSPA) is comprised of the Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, and Public and Nonprofit Leadership Departments and the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The college collectively offers thirty programs to over 2700 students, including undergraduate, graduate, and certificate students. CCSPA is a community-engaged college, with programs that are designed to help students find creative ways to engage with, learn from, and contribute to growth and sustainability of the urban and regional communities of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Advancement of equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in practice are integral to the work of the college’s 44 resident faculty, 127 community faculty, seven service faculty, and nine staff.

The School/Academic Department: The Human Services Department was established as part of the university’s ongoing effort to provide high-quality educational opportunities to students seeking entry into human services careers. The mission of the Human Services Department is to prepare professionally and culturally competent students who integrate theory and practice in order to effectively deliver human services. The department stresses a flexible, student-centered approach, which includes multiple learning strategies, in meeting the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Learning opportunities provide students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, professional attitudes and application of knowledge through experiential learning. Our curricula emphasize advocacy, social justice, empowerment, and a strengths-based approach.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.
