St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Manager of Volunteer Programs in St. Louis, Missouri

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President of Philanthropy

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Manager of Volunteer Programs provides direction, coordination, and support for the Symphony Volunteer Association (SVA) in planning, executing, and evaluating all SVA activities. The position serves as the liaison between the SVA, its members, and various St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) departments. The Manager is passionate about volunteerism, an enthusiastic recruiter, advocate, and a talented organizer. This position is a major collaborator with the entire SLSO staff to create amazing volunteer experiences.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Direct, advise, and coordinate all aspects of the SVA, in conjunction with the SVA President and Executive Committee, including volunteer support for concerts, educational programs, other SLSO events, membership activities, appeals, and fundraising events.

  • Serve as principal liaison between the SVA and the SLSO staff.

  • Assist the SLSO Philanthropy staff to identify members of the SVA as prospective donors and to facilitate contact, as appropriate

  • Assist with the stewardship of SVA donors, as appropriate.

  • Plan and oversee budget for the SVA.

  • Assist other areas of the Philanthropy team as needed.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of volunteer-based Philanthropy programs, database management, broad-based solicitation programs including direct mail. Familiarity with development and office-based software, social media, and marketing resources. Familiarity with Wufoo or similar software used for meetings, event, and volunteer sign-ups.

Experience: Minimum 5 years broad-based fundraising or membership experience (or the equivalent) and working with volunteers in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to use sound judgment, diplomacy, and relationship management skills to achieve defined goals. Strong supervisory or employee relations background also required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires considerable judgment to apply principles to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables.

  • Ability to work with confidential data.

  • Well organized, with a strong attention to detail.

  • Strong public speaking skills for both in-person and virtual meetings.

  • Strong interpersonal skills requiring the ability to communicate with internal and external contacts and influence persons in all types of positions using a high degree of diplomacy

  • Proficient computer skills and in use of software (Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel & Access, PowerPoint).

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously from beginning to end.

  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule for Philanthropy and SVA function meetings and events, concerts and community events that includes evenings and weekends.

  • Passion for the arts and commitment to the mission of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Knowledge of orchestral music and the performing arts is preferred.

This role is part-time and pays between $22-$27/hour, based upon experience and abilities.

About the SVA:

Today’s Symphony Volunteer Association dates back to 1904. SVA efforts were often focused around fundraising, however, in recent years, the SVA shifted the focus of its volunteer activities from fundraising to stewardship and education.

Today, the SVA continues to pursue significant goals for stewardship, ambassadorship, and education and looks forward to future growth of the SVA membership as part of the Friends of the Symphony. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of projects that support the mission of the SLSO: to enrich people’s lives through the power of music.
