Description

The position supports the operations of the offices of accessibility services and accommodations within the Student Success Center. The incumbent works directly with students, faculty and staff to provide and coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities. The specialist also assists with academic support and retention initiatives sponsored by the Center.

Examples of Duties

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: (indicate percentage of time in right column – total time must add to 100%)

Oversee the examination scheduling and proctoring processes for students with approved testing accommodations. 30%

Maintain a caseload of students with disabilities and students enrolled in one of the university’s probationary programs; provide regular, one-on-one academic coaching (counseling) to assigned students.15%

Assist with the implementation of university procedures for students to request, evaluate and implement academic and housing accommodations, including temporary accommodations and assistive technology. 20%

Develop, plan and implement student workshops and resource guides to provide students with research based best practices related to college success. Collaborate with graduate assistants to schedule and run workshops. 15%

Assist with retention outreach to students, conducting academic interventions in the student of concern, early alert, and midterm processes. 10%

Assist in the development and maintenance of the Peer Led Executive Functioning Skills groups and work with the ASA Peer Leaders on curriculum and outreach

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: (indicate required or preferred)

Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in education, special/inclusive education, rehabilitation, psychology, counseling or related field.

Years of Experience – (required or preferred number of years and in which specific areas)

1-2 years of experience working with students in a higher education setting is preferred. Experience with teaching and lesson plan development is preferred. Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current state and federal laws and regulations regarding the rights of persons with disabilities and responsibilities of higher education institutions

  • Knowledge about current methods of providing reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities while maintaining program performance standards; ability to describe, evaluate, and implement best practices regarding services for students with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of student development theories and their applications in practical contexts; ability to research and identify best practices in academic support services

  • Ability to apply current best practices of student pedagogy and learning to lesson planning and workshop development.

  • Strong ability to communicate and express ideas both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to students from diverse backgrounds and the ability to recognize and respond to the unique needs of diverse, underrepresented, and marginalized students.

  • Have excellent organizational, time management, and other executive functioning skills and be able to teach these to others.

  • Ability to work effectively, decisively and flexibly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential material and maintain integrity and confidentiality of data

  • Ability to relate professionally and positively to students and colleagues.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Skill with Microsoft Office (Specifically, Word, Excel and Outlook) to implement, develop, and maintain computer-based office operations; ability to quickly learn programs used for tutor management and student success initiatives.
