Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position acts as a Law Enforcement Lieutenant and serves as the immediate supervisor to the assigned evening and midnight shift Law Enforcement Officers and Police Dispatchers/Duty Officers. As a sworn law enforcement officer, the incumbent is responsible for the pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators.

  • Serves as the night shift Watch Commander. Oversees the assigned afternoon and midnight shift personnel. Assigns shift work schedules, reviews, and approves leave requests, coordinates work assignments, reviews and approves all paperwork submitted by personnel at the end of each shift. Plans, assigns, and directs investigations on the night shift. Supervises and coordinates the training and education activities regarding Crime Prevention, Emergency Preparedness and Planning, First Aid and Security for all students and School staff during the residential hours. Keeps the Chief briefed on all significant developments and issues. May serve in the absence of the Chief.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs all night shift operations and activities, not limited to, but including, coordinating all activities during critical or emergency situations, selective enforcement operations and coordination of events with municipal and county law enforcement agencies. Completes administrative tasks and assignments. Communicates and meets with School staff on issues involving Campus Police services. Promotes Public Relations through collaboration with the School and its various departments. Coordinates law enforcement activities with other agencies requesting access to campus.

  • Promotes quality leadership, provides guidance, and encourages professional development to assigned personnel. Supervises, develops and/or conducts in-service training programs for assigned personnel. Assists the Chief in conducting interviews of applicants for employment and applicant background investigations.

  • Exercises independent judgment and decision-making skills. Assists in the formulation of policies and procedures. Prepares records and reports.

  • Operates a computer and two-way communication equipment. Maintains equipment and inventories.

  • Counsels assigned personnel and evaluates their work performance. Involved in new hire process.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief.

  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR;

    Qualifications

    Four years of sworn law enforcement or sworn investigative experience.

    College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours per year for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

    In addition to the above requirements, Florida Statute 943 requires that any person employed in this class must:

    (1) Be at least 19 years of age.

    (2) Be a citizen of the United States, notwithstanding any laws of the State to the contrary.

    (3) Be a high school graduate or its "equivalent" as the term may be determined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission of the Department of Law Enforcement.

    (4) Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.

    (5) Have his/her processed fingerprints on file with the employing agency.

    (6) Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, based on specifications established by the Commission.

    (7) Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.

    (8) Possess a current certificate of compliance for basic employment certification issued by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.

    Sign Language Requirements

    Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain Intermediate proficiency in sign language within four years of hire.

    Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

    Hiring Salary Range: 12-month position, $59,175.68 - $66,675.68 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

    Associate Degree $1500.00

    Bachelor Degree $3000.00

    Master Degree $4500.00

    Additional Related and verified Full-time Experience (20 year max) @ $150.00 per year

    Sign Language Proficiency Level: Survival Plus $300.00, Intermediate $450.00, Advanced $600

    Hours: Sunday – Thursday 2pm to 10pm
