Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the development and continuing management of the Food Service Department and all related services.

  • Responsible for serving of meals to students, authorized staff and guests of the school. Oversees distribution and preparation of food. Assures that food personnel prepare food in the most economical, attractive and appetizing manner possible within the allowed budget. Ensures that every precaution is taken to prevent contamination of food. Develop and implement in-service trainings for the Department.

  • Supervises all FSDB kitchens, dining rooms, and associated spaces. Ensures all small and large equipment is maintained in safe operating condition. Supervises personnel assigned to Food Service Department. Regularly visits Food Service Personnel assigned to various locations to conduct QA inspections. Reviews Health Department Inspection Reports, taking corrective action as required. Responsible for collection of tickets from employees and visitors. Prepare cycle menus and oversee dietetic menus. Prepares bid specifications and directs all purchasing activities according to applicable policies. Prepares correspondence and work directives as necessary for meal standardization within satellite locations. Oversees party and special food requests. Meets with other School officials as required. Oversees all banquets, functions and events considered special. Maintains required records necessary for USDA and State of Florida, and general operations such as inventory, head count sheets, food requests and expenditure of food items as may be necessary for the proper performance of duties. Interviews and hires food service applicants for the department, responsible for annual evaluations and discipline when needed. Oversees operation of Food Service Computer Programs. Oversees work orders on machinery repairs and ordering of parts for same. Oversees the review of all timesheets. Prepares budget, cost of food, labor and machinery.

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of Food Support Workers' evaluations, discipline, and hiring. Ensures that employees are assigned to correct workstations and staffing of all kitchens are met. Additional responsibilities include assisting in maintaining production records, USDA records, temperature reports, inventories and that kitchen evaluations are completed, checked for accuracy, submitted and filed in a timely manner. Manages and coordinates the maintenance, proper care, and work orders related to kitchen equipment. Document that all required trainings are arranged and completed by all staff. Oversee the operations of the Gore dining center and the transportation of weekly bus food ordering, preparation and delivery to the bus loop.

  • Develops, implements and manages a food service training program for students and staff at FSDB, coordinating and integrating the program with department Principals and other educational staff. Incorporate training through "Tasting" presentations and demonstrations with the students based on age levels. Assist/guide student workers, training them to gain usable knowledge for future jobs in the workforce.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Food Service Management Principles and Practices, County and State sanitation policies, OSHA Safety and Nutritional USDA and Type A Rules and Quality Assurance evaluation;

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

  • Knowledge of office procedures and practices;

  • Ability to plan, organize and direct a diverse Food Service operation in a large institution with satellite kitchens and a retail food operation;

  • Ability to supervise personnel;

  • Ability to plan, purchase and store food;

  • Ability to plan nutritionally balanced meals conforming to USDA requirements within cost standards, and prepare budgetary needs, bid specifications and amounts for institutional Food Service;

  • Ability to establish work schedules and in-service training programs;

  • Ability to determine manpower, equipment and develop standards for production, service, sanitation and safety;

  • Ability to direct catering service for banquets and other special functions;

  • Ability to work independently, and to follow verbal and written instructions;

  • Ability to maintain a Professional Food Managers Certificate approved by the State of Florida;

  • Ability to develop, implement and provide continuing direction to a student culinary training program;

  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI;

  • Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in related field or a high school diploma and professional experience in the applicable area of responsibility may be substituted at the rate of two years equivalent to one year of college.

  • Twelve credit hours of college coursework in educational leadership or administration and supervision or equivalent.

  • Five years professional experience in related field.

  • Additional requirements mandated by state/federal law and position responsibilities.

    Preferred

    Experience in a K-12 school setting

    Sign Language Requirements

    Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to attain an Intermediate proficiency in sign language within four years of hire.

    Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.

    Hiring Salary Range: 12-month position, $62,429.18 - $69,929.18 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

    Hours: Varies, at least 80 hours biweekly, may include evenings.
