Springfield City Police Officer in Springfield, South Dakota

This position will be temporary to assist with Springfield's July 3rd and 4th Celebration

General law enforcement to preserve public peace, protect lives, property and rights of the publicas well as to enforce statutory law and municipal ordinances.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently, achieving goals without directsupervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Methods, procedures and policies of the town, including city ordinances, employeemanual, policy and procedure manuals, contracts, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Current methods of law enforcement and established law enforcement procedures.
  • Functions and interrelationships of the town, state and local law enforcement agenciesand other governmental agencies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with data entry, MS365, basic cyber protection.
  • Use and maintain a variety of law enforcement equipment including firearms, radio, videoequipment, tape recorder, police vehicle, identification kit, intoxilyser, ASP baton andpepper spray.Ready to respond at a moment's notice to any situation related to the responsibilities of theposition.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform duties and complete responsibilities under stressful or dangerous conditions,often involving considerable personal risk or risk to others.
  • Make swift, sound and educated decisions while reacting calmly and quickly inemergencies.
  • Patrols city streets and neighborhoods to deter crime or apprehend and/or arrest violatorsor suspects who violate federal, state or city ordinances.
  • Monitors radio calls; communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints;reports of criminal events; requests for law enforcement and domestic or public disputes;inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments.
  • Secures crime scenes; gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewingvictims, witnesses, informants and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles andbuilding; takes and file photographs; take detailed confessions; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts and related information; makes arrests and processes arrestedsuspects; detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis forprobably cause for criminal acts; testifies in court.
  • Conducts accident investigations providing first-aid for injured, taking safeguards toprevent further accidents; interviews principals and witnesses, taking written statementsfrom drivers and witnesses; examines vehicles and roadways, observing traffic controldevices and obstruction to view; takes necessary street measurements; clears the scene of
  • obstructions and wreckage.
  • Acts as custodian of personal property and evidence being held for court presentation;maintains records of property, evidence and automobiles held or impounded.
  • Enforces traffic laws and regulations; detects traffic violators; issues parking violations; performs traffic accident investigations and makes reports; facilitates the movement oftraffic and pedestrians around accidents, disabled traffic control devices or heavilycongested areas; assists disabled motorists; escorts or directs traffic for funerals and otherpublic gatherings.
  • Prepares, obtains and serves arrest warrants; serves legal documents.Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and accidents, victim and suspect statements and other related information; completes state reportdocuments to accurately record criminal offenses; prepares incident reports, arrestreports and lab and property sheets; organizes and files records; enters information intocomputer.
  • Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote apositive image for the department and to build cooperative and collaborative relationshipswith the community; provides crime prevention/ safety servic s to the community.
  • Assists citizens on civil matters; assists children in need of services, children at schools;assist personnel and local agencies to include Mike Durfee State Prison, Bon Homme
  • County Sheriff's Department and SD Game, Fish and Parks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a High School Diploma and/or GED and one (1) year of experience; or a
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training certification.
  • Valid SD Driver's License with acceptable record.
  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be willing to submit to all required law enforcement background checks.
  • Must be free of any felony convictions.

WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be physically able to operate different types of equipment and machinery includingoffice equipment, law enforcement equipment and tools, safety equipment, firearms,communications equipment.
  • Must be able to exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or frequently lift,carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; must be able to lift and/or carry weights of upto 100 pounds and drag items up to 150 pounds.
  • Work involves walking, standing, running, climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling,crawling and jumping for varying periods of time.
  • Must be able to defend oneself from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights;wears body armor and other equipment.
  • Vision and hearing tests may be required throughout tenure with the city as patrol officers risk noise-induced hearing loss from sirens and require peripheral, depth and distance vison with theability to adjust focus.
  • Patrol officers may be exposed to diseases such as Hepatitis B and HIV/ AIDS. Patrol officers maybe exposed to violence from person who are under the influence of controlled substances and/orare mentally unstable.
  • Law enforcement is not only physically strenuous but also emotionally and/or mentally stressful. Itcan involve dangerous situations.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Maintain confidentiality with dealing with the public.
  • Proper maintenance of city owned vehicles, office and property.
  • Ability to work various shifts including, but not limited to days, nights, weekends, etc.
  • Enforces city animal control ordinances, including the capture, impoundments, care anddisposal of animals.
  • Occasional travel to applicable trainings and meetings.

  • Emergency management
  • Associates (or higher) degree in law enforcement or related field
  • Current or within 5 years of last certification date
    • EMT certification
    • Firefighter 1 certification
