Responsibilities

The Advisor – Grid Center for Reliable Electricity Delivery is a program leadership position that requires an understanding of integrated, multi‐scale energy system models, operational challenges associated with distributed energy resources integration at scale, and the evolving energy market, policy, and regulatory landscape. The selected candidate will be future leaning, capable of thinking through how decisions today will impact the grid of the future, and a skilled interdisciplinary problem solver.

We are seeking an Advisor – Grid Center for Reliable Electricity Delivery (GridCRED) to lead a portfolio of high‐impact research activities at the intersection of advanced analytics, modeling, and policy to enable a decarbonized, reliable, and resilient power system. A primary role of the advisor will be standing up and directing the newly formed GridCRED – a national grid analytics capability sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity that informs actionable, scenario-based decisions for planning and operating a reliable, resilient, and affordable grid. The position will involve building the capability – integrating the people, data, and tools – to provide the foundation for timely, replicable analyses of specific grid scenarios.

Specific responsibilities of the Advisor position include:

  • Providing technical leadership and influencing multi‐disciplinary teams working on efforts at the intersection of multiscale system modeling, application of advanced computing, power market design, and energy policy.

  • Overseeing the GridCRED program and shaping the technical strategy and operating model.

  • Using extensive experience and deep understanding of existing theories, principles, and concepts in grid modernization planning and distributed energy resource integration challenges to provide holistic solutions to stakeholders.

  • Leading the capture of funding to develop new research opportunities and partnering across a broad set of program offices in the Department of Energy, State of Washington, and other state and federal agencies.

  • Partnering with research staff, relationship managers, and project management office directors on proposal development, including definition of scope, schedule, budget, and risk assessment.

  • Cultivating and representing the laboratory in partnerships with grid planning stakeholders and interest groups, including utilities, tribal governments, energy NGOs, regulators, and technology providers.

  • Making recommendations that set precedent for future decisions and inform local, state, and national policies and decisions at highest levels.

  • Mentoring other mid‐ and early‐career staff members.

  • Travel to execute projects, build relationships, and maintain leadership in the field.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 11 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 9 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related technical field.

  • Possesses the ability to broadly apply principles, standards, theories, and concepts of a systems engineering lifecycle to the development and implementation of new tools including applications, algorithms, models, and visualization techniques.

  • Recognized for program leadership in grid modernization planning and/or policy concepts with active participation in national forums for power systems.

  • In‐depth understanding of power grid operations and planning.

  • Knowledge of utility industry economics and business processes.

  • Experience leading the large technical teams.

  • Exceptional communication skills with a track record of effectively translating complex technical concepts to policymakers, planners, and other decision‐makers.

  • Experience developing large‐scale research proposals.

  • Extensive professional network within the power systems engineering, utility, and/or energy regulatory community.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
