Position Summary

The Process Engineer is responsible for process improvements in all functional areas including Environmental Health & Safety, Quality & Food Safety, operations, and maintenance. You will start with a focus in the upstream Fermentation department. There will be opportunities and expectations to learn and grow throughout the plant from utilities to packaging. You will apply engineering principles to new and existing equipment with tasks ranging from process design to the evaluation and implementation of new technologies. You may also be responsible for assisting in managing day to day operations, tracking and understanding department costs, yields, quality, process performance, and mentoring operators. This position will indirectly lead 10+ hourly colleagues and support the Department Superintendent in areas of daily and weekly scheduling, coordination of training, updating standard operating procedures, and completing month end inventory documents.

Basic Job Function:

  • Provide technical support to management and production staff.

  • Continually fine-tune and optimize the process, to improve efficiency and safety in the production area.

  • Facilitate troubleshooting efforts and address production limiting factors.

  • Share in the coordination of weekly maintenance planning for the production area.

  • Lead the development of departmental optimization projects through;

  • Management of Change

  • Capital projects

  • Issuing Work Requests

  • Walk down and punch-list development of projects and jobs

  • Coordinate start-up of new processes.

  • Support plant safety by performing safety observations, near miss reporting, and submitting safety work requests.

  • Reinforce quality and the food safety management system by incorporating GMP and MOC programs.

  • Work with plant personnel to ensure environmental compliance.

  • Work with colleagues to develop/update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions. Train colleagues after SOP approval.

  • Support the department superintendent to provide coverage when needed.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills:

  • Serve as project manager during the design phase, construction period, and implementation of engineering solutions.

  • Experience with root cause analysis.

  • Knowledge of working in a laboratory environment with basic understanding of chemical and biological processes.

  • Ability to interpret flow diagrams and P&IDs.

  • Ability to recognize, assess, and provide opportunities for yield improvement and process optimization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

  • 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting.

  • Strong commitment to safety culture.

  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written, throughout all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work both independently or within groups in order to achieve the desired results in the most efficient manner.

  • Technical competence in process mechanics, instrumentation, controls, calculations and utility systems.

  • Ability to achieve and track excellence using performance-driven metrics.

  • Proficient computer skills.

  • Well-developed independent judgment and problem solving.

  • Excellent organizational skills, able to effectively handle multiple ongoing tasks.

  • Continuous process improvement mindset driving best practices and reliability.

  • Task oriented and self-motivated, able to function without direct supervision.
