Generac Power Systems Senior Electrical Component Quality Engineer for Wire Wound Parts in South Portland, Maine

Generac Energy Technologies is seeking an Electrical Components Quality Engineer to join our growing team. This position will focus on all electronic components for Generac Clean Energy products with key emphasis on wire wound magnetic parts used in the design. The successful candidate will aid in the selection and supplier qualification for all electronic commodity suppliers, manage the technical aspects of the individual component commodities and cover all technical process audits and problem resolution. Candidates should be passionate about assuring high quality, defect free parts and subassemblies are delivered for the manufacture of final assemblies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Responsible for electronics components qualification and capability of understanding the product function, manufacturing processes and materials. The following list of commodities will be the responsibility of this role.

  • Wound components, Printed Circuit Boards (PCB’s), FETs and Power Electronics, Digital and analog discrete components, Relays, IC’s, Cables and Connectors

  • Knowledge of high frequency magnetic design, development and manufacturing and experience with EMI/EMC

  • Knowledge and experience in designing high frequency magnetics, core, bobbin and winding selection to ensure it can sustain product applicable environmental conditions without any part performance degradation.

  • Experience and knowledge of thermal management in magnetic components. Should be able to provide such technique to design team and provide help in components performance related to its thermal behavior.

  • Ability to read, understand and find out component details from its data sheet. Provide important support to design team and assisting in correct part choices for a design.

  • Should be able to perform component derating analysis to learn their performance in various power and environmental conditions. Ability to perform derating and life expectancy on high frequency magnetics is a must have.

  • Knowledge and experience of various SMT processes used in populating single- and double-sided PCBs with knowledge of different solder and flux types.

  • Experience of designing and testing power electronics that operate at high voltage, high current and high frequency.

  • Experience with electrical simulation and calculation tools like Mathcad, PSpice or similar.

  • Experience and working knowledge with eCAD tools like Altium, Eagle to design review an electrical design at schematic and layout levels.

  • Supplier/Partner selection and development. (Technical support to Corporate Supplier Quality)

  • Administers Supplier Process Audits according to predetermined plans.

  • Develop and own quality performance metrics.

  • Serves as a quality representative when required during product development or product enhancement efforts.

  • Provide critical inputs on materials and process choices where applicable.

  • Participate in DFMEA and DFM activities as applicable to specific component commodities.

  • Administers/supports PPAP with suppliers and assures production readiness. (i.e. Process Flows, PFMEA and Control Plans)

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives with suppliers based on a formal trend management approach and suffering performance metrics. Provide timelines and conduct cost analysis for improvement of projects using lean sigma tools.

  • Lead and drive all 8D SCAR (Supplier Corrective Action Request) activities adhering to required time to closure.

  • Participate in all Corrective Action and Preventative Action processes that pertain to specific commodity and drive actions with suppliers as necessary.

  • Assures tracking effective implementation of all ECO’s affecting products and production processes at suppliers.

  • Partner with Sourcing to establish and manage a supplier management program.

  • Represent and report on Component Quality at management meetings. (i.e. Supplier Performance Scorecards etc.)

  • Monitor adherence to quality and safety certification standards.

  • Other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, or similar

  • Must have at least 5 years of manufacturing of high reliability electronic, electromechanical or products with a focus on quality management in a contract manufacturing or electromechanical assembly environment.

  • Strong experience with solder chemistries/processing, electronics cleaning and cleanliness validation processes, conformal coating and potting.

  • Must possess strong technical fluency in wire wound components. Good technical fluency in other commodities reflected in the responsibilities list above will be a plus.

  • Solid quantitative skill set and the ability to analyze and communicate with well-supported data

  • Proficient with the suite of Office Software, Quality and Statistical tools.

  • An individual critical thinker to strategically align actions to needs and set goals for a technical team for success.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma green or black belt preferred.

  • IEEE certification will be a plus.

  • ANSYS Thermal Management Tools Knowledge and Certification

  • Proven budgetary / Cost Control experience / awareness.

  • Power electronics, consumer electronics or commercial electronics background preferred.

  • Experience working with international companies and in a matrix organization.

  • Proven experience collaborating with multiple sites and functions to drive common solutions.

  • Power Inductors/Transformers design and manufacturing

  • Applied knowledge of Electrical circuits and participation in design reviews

The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 - 50 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
